Scientists find fire retardant in Tassie devils

Scientists have found high levels of potentially carcinogenic flame retardant chemicals in Tasmanian devils.
The discovery may fuel a global campaign to ban the use of such chemicals, according to a report today.
The preliminary results of tests ordered by the Tasmanian Government on chemicals found in fat tissue from 16 devils have been obtained by a News Limited newspaper under Freedom of Information laws.
The results show high concentrations of toxic chemicals used in [color=red=flame retardants commonly found in computers, white goods, carpets, foams, bedding and furniture.[/color]
Scientists say more research is needed to establish if the chemicals helped trigger devil facial tumour disease, a rare communicable cancer that threatens to drive the animal to extinction.
