hi y33basOriginally posted by y33bas:hello people! ANY melbournians around in this forum?
i be heading over to Melbourne in mid April for my holidays. It be a free and easy trip therefore i have to plan my own itinerary!
I be staying in Frankston area with my friend and can some of you people drop some places of interest that i must definitely visit? please!
thanks.
I be staying at my friend's place - Frankston to be exact. Because it is in the suburbs..and i don't drive..i think exploring is going to be difficult. However, i think i can take my time to explore because i be there for a month. =)

Frankston has a terminal Train Station that you can take all the way to Caulfield, where Monash University is, and then depending on which train you're taking, you might have to switch to another one or two trains or not have to switch at all, to go into the Flinders Station. Across the road from Flinders Station is a tram stop for the FREE City Circle Tram where you can just board and enjoy a round-the-city trip and alight at the places you're interested in. ;) It's very safe and easy!
Since Frankston is in Zone 2, a daily Metlink card will cost you about A$9.90. It's cheaper to get a 5 X Zone 1 + 2 ticket for just A$46.60. We're spoilt in Singapore, but once you get the hang of travelling here, you'll do well. Just make sure you don't travel late at night... it's not too safe, certain stations are in deserted areas, and the streets aren't too well-lit at night. :P
It's best that you log on to http://www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au/ to plan your trips beforehand, otherwise, you might miss your train and wait pretty long for the next train! :P The train might not stop at all stations, depending on the time and all that, so it's best to check thoroughly otherwise, you'll end up somewhere else!
You are allowed to eat and drink on the trains and trams, so no worries!

There's quite a few backpacking inns and budget accoms directly opposite Flinders train station, along (duh) Flinders St. Also some not too bad ones along Elizabeth St, towards Queen Vic mkt.
Then again, best place i hear, is on Rhonda's couch but I heard u gotta wash dishes, mop floor, water plants etc etc ...

London Bridge (and what remains of it) ...

stayed at the elizabeth hostel (cant remember if spelling is correct) when i was there 2yrs back. it is diagonally across Queen Victoria Market - great place for breakfast. iirc it was aud 80-90 per nite. check out www.wotif.com for accoms.
pick up the tourist information booklets at the airport or at the tourist information centre in the city. they are a great source of info of wat is happening ard melb.
as for places to go to, my must go list as follows:
1) Queen Victoria Market - great for breakie
2) Federation Square - for interesting exhibitions n such. Caught the Pixar Exhibition last Sep n it was awesome
3) Melbourne Observertory (bleah dun know the spelling) or the new observertory thing. Great view of melbourne , u can even see grampians iirc
4) Hope onto the city circle (free of charge) and get a free city tour! an other free transport is a Tourist's Bus (i think that is the name). it bring you to all the cool places like St Kilda's.
5) St Kilda's. There is a theme park there, beach, and rows n rows of shops selling oh-so-pretty-i-can't-bear-to-eat-them cakes n pies.
6) Casino. Just kay po look ard also shiok. I din gamble there cos the odds looks sucky =P
7) Philip island. there are 3 kinds of ticket prices, get the middle one. it would bring u really close to penguins. a word of advice, bring a waterproof jacket with hood. the winds r damn strong n cold. it rained when i was there n a waterproof jacket with hood was a life savior.
8) Great Ocean Road. Great views, long drive, great photos. Every time i'm in melb, i will set a day just for GOR tour =). if u r in a tour bus, be sure to sit on the left side so u get the best views heehee.
9) Grampians. Another great place for pictures n awesome views. Remember to wear good sturdy climbing shoes. it's a mountain afterall =)
10) Eat Soulvaki (sorry dun know spelling). it is like turkish kebab but a whole lot better. there is a shop at the corner of chinatown that sells them.
Most of all, when in rome, do as the romans do. if the tour guide say dun take pictures of penguins, then dun... if you see pple clear trays at macdonald's, just do the same... oh one last word, the jap food in the city sucks, dun bother trying
have fun in melb!
updates!! =0

Boots, man, boots! I told you guys the last time and look what happened to Don!
y33, forget Frankston, dude - if you're used to Singapore's public transport system you'll hate it. I'll leave it up to TX and Don to tell you what the Elizabeth Hostel looks like on the inside, but as far as location is concerned, it's a good bet.

bleah ... I thought it'd be like SG's national mountain park lol ..... what a noob ...
hey guys i will be flying to melbourne tomorrow night~! so i will try to upload pictures! yay!
If you can spare the time, recommend you to take a 3 days 2 nights (or 4 days 3 nights) trip along the Great Ocean Road, Grampians and Ballarat. It's much more relaxing than a day trip (aka rushed trip) along the great ocean road just to view the 12 apostles.
my itinerary.
