I'm sure there are battalions of retrenched blue collar aunties over 45 years old out there willing to take up these jobs ....
the question is, would they be hired ? ....
as for the bus driver one, i'm sure there are legions of unkers out there willing to take up one of these jobs too .... but if they have a wife and a bunch of kids to feed, they can't survive on $1200 a month .... before CPF ....
it's really a question of how low you can go before you have to stop and say, I can't live on this amount of money ......
by introducing legions of workers who deflat wages and send the bulk of their earnings out of the country to their homes, I hardly think we are "helping the economy"....
i think i heard my friend say before, those lorry drivers fetching sand etc from Lorong Halus, they get 100 per trip or sth.

Raising the wages is no issue, but the problem is shift work and if wages is to increase so does fare esp when now everyone in transportation is caught in this oil price crisis
Actually those comments at SC, carry on like tis, sooner or later no one even wants to drive SBS buses anymore
whine tis whine tat
Reminds me...
Not just SBS has tis problem, even semi fab plants also has tis problem of getting locals once shift work is mentioned

you're sure.. but are you really?
it's a matter of economics.. if they increase wages, there is a knock-on effect.. why do you think everything is so damned expensive in Japan?

but then again, things are already getting more and more expensive without the increased in wages. if any, the wages for degree holders decreased as compared to the 90's.

Are you sure the uncles and aunties want to take the job
Let's just use one of my customers as an example
They are a pork cutting plant in Singapore
They tried their best to hire locals and got some aunties to do the packaging and pasting stickers etc. They work on shift and in the chiller and yes they are provided warm clothing
What happened? The aunties bitched about the shift, the cold and some just walked out in an hour. You are talking about people who need the money and job and this is how to act.
What did my customer do? They turned to PRC workers and guess what? No problems at all besides them talking too loud and their salary is cheaper than those aunties.

right now, there's inflationary pressure on prices and deflationary pressure on wages, especially at the lower end of the scale ....
in japan, a "freeter", an odd-job worker, can earn more than $4k a month, they thus can afford the astronomical prices, and have some left over besides, that's how japanese bums can afford to go backpacking in thailand and australia, without going on goverment's dole .....
in Singapore we're being pushed in two directions ... with an influx of foreign workers, driving down basic wages, especially for workers at the lower end of the spectrum, at the same time, we're facing ever-increasing cost of living, be it transport costs, food costs, housing costs ....
we are rapidly becoming a stratified society .... there are the "haves" .. and the "have-nots".....
it's really time to pull a "malaysian election" in Singapore ....
Can give lots of example where when shift work are concerned, end up foreign workers take the job
PSA Corp's crane operators, semi fab plant workers, SBS drivers
So seriously on the surface it looks like employers are being mean and evil and cutting costs by hiring cheap FTs instead of leaving these jobs for locals, but when you are actually in their shoes, you may see a different story altogether.
I hate to be crude but the problem with Singaporeans is that they
"Ai Pi Ai Qi Ai Tua Lup Ni" ok
Another reason why prices are going up is because the AVA and Gov actually relaxed and allowed us importers to raise prices because guess what??? No one wants to sell food to Singapore due to our cheap prices and strict rules. Even for a cheap commodity like Cutting fat, the Fillapinos are paying higher prices than us.
So tell me who in the right mind wants to sell to Singapore if we don't follow the Global market?
Even the Malaysians was saying abt fresh chicken
We demand cheap cheap cheap... but have you thought of the real worldwide cost?
if they paid the wages here in singapore like they did in other developed countries for being a cop, i wouldn't mind.
maybe the best job for me is to be a CONsultant.

you know what I think ? ... I keep flashing back to those upton sinclairs that I've read ... where the exploiters recruits ever more wretched people to work at their factories ...
first they got the Irish to work at Chicago's meat packing plants, then when they got too expensive, they move onto the russians, the ukrainians, the lithuanians, finally, they grabbed blacks from the cotton fields of the south .... paying each wave successively lower wages in turn .......
is that where we want to go in Singapore ? ... so let's say that Singaporeans are a bunch of lazy workers who onlyn want a cushy job in an air-conditioned office and don't want to sweat on the job .... sure, you can always find someone more wretched and desperate to do the job ... someone who's willing to complain less and work longer hours and accept less pay ..... but where will we be ? ....
so the conditions suck, pay more, and you'd naturally have people working there .... look at the oil rigs of north america .... dangerous work, back-breaking work, blue collar work, long hours, no women, no alcohol, no cigarettes for months on end .... and they average 300k a year ! .....
you know why I think those aunties walk out ? ... I think they walked out not because they are lazy, cos they think their health and safety is not worth the $600 they are being paid per month ! ...
we can complain about the qualities of Singapore's workers till the cows come home, but we have to remember that foreign workers do not have to suffer Singapore's cost structures ....
they rent, they don't buy, their roots are not here, they earn, save, and fark off .....
they don't have to pay off HDBs, worry about feeding and clothing the children, sending them through school here, don't have to worry about retirement here .....
this unbridled influx will hollow out our country in turn .... with the exception of people working in the public sector, remember that every single one of us, is ultimately replaceable .... so where do we draw the line ? ....
i used to think that even if we don't let in the foreign workers, we'd eventually have to compete against them globally ... now I realized how wrong I was ....
2day i & my crew nearly responded to the RTA case at Loyang Ave but was diverted to another case at the last min...

it's not just about the commodities prices alone .... what's happening is that people are increasingly unable to afford the food being sold because their wages have not kept up with inflation ! ....
i think it's seriously screwed up when the start telling singaporeans to switch to frozen meat and what not ... they are not really addressing the issue there ... it's basically telling people to make do with less ... when they should be looking at ways for people to be able to afford more ...
Seriously Fatum, as an employer do you want to keep hiring and training because people just walk out on you?
And we are not even talking about freezer temperatures but chiller temperature. They have warm clothing and how dangerous is stickering stickers on a small retail pack of pork? Ya you might catch a cold. Same like you walk out of a cold office to our hot weather outside and you might catch a cold.
Sure if you want higher pay, your output have to make up for it too. You cannot just pay more because that fella is a Singaporean but his effeciency is just not there.
Well for higher pay you would expect better output too right?
Why are the Americans able to have high pay and yet remain so competitive?
That's because they are very efficient and fast workers.
In a busy resturant you can see like maybe only 1 waitress and she takes orders and get the bills etc and does it with a smile. In the cutting plants, you will be amazed at how they work and the workers there are all Americans.
On their fields, 1 man can harvest acres and acres of land.
Speaking from the employer point of view, the typical blue collar worker here, expects to be treated nice with light work load because he is Singaporean and most of the time they bo chup and just tell you 'Dunno la' so they don't have to do it.
Sure the pay for them can go up, but at the same time one has to be realistic that attitudes have to change and seriously a lot of Singaporeans need to realise that our world is becoming borderless now.
Anyway the Chinese are not just invading Singapore. They are invading everywhere. Even in Canada, for Maple Leaf Foods, with their major restructuring, most of the traders I deal with now are PRC and mind you they are very sharp traders and write better English than most Singaporeans in SgF

dude.. the same thing is happening everywhere in the world right now..
the term is the "New Hungry"
you can blame the speculators actually.. and the idiots who talk biofuels..
both are driving commodity prices sky high..

Pls, we're not to say because of tis we're going to say do price control
It has failed in Malaysia terribly... Because now the govt has to be accountable for these commodity price increase! Because of this, it became partly a reason for BN's lost other than the police or flood or corruption
