Can Christmas Island red crabs be eaten?

Speaking of crabs, I recently watched an episode of Bobby Chinn's World Cafe Asia where he went to KL, and Malaysia's famous chef, Chef Wan, was there to demonstrate a crab recipe. The way he killed the crab was brutal!! The poor thing was still alive when he chopped off all its legs, and then without humanely killing it first, he pried off its shell! The poor crab was struggling with what remained of its limbs!! It was so disturbing! He then chopped the entire body into bits without bothering to kill it first!!
christmas island crabs are poisonous to humans..

uhh.. the guy is then a hack..
if he does that, the texture of the crab meat is gone..
what you need to do is to kill it instantly..
you do that by stabbing it right down the centre with a hugeass knife (forget about the chopsticks.. it's too small to kill the crab outright) or you rip the shell off and chop the crab into two down the middle with a cleaver..

I throw my crabs into the freezer for at least half an hour first .....
that way they go painlessly ..... doesn't work that well with cold water crabs though ..... the last time I cooked crabs in canada i had to execute them with a knife thrust into the carapac ...

i had a few hermit crabs as pets once ... I think they were a craze in singapore years back ....

I don't think I can deal with killing anything that's still alive. Guess I'll never get to cook stuff like crab until I get a mate who'll do the killing for me.
OK, time to go watch my TV cooking shows / read my cooking mags or cookbooks again! It's so lovely to lounge about with hot beverages when it's cold and wintry outside!
