Coming back to Singapore for a weeklong vacation on the wk of May 19th. I've lived in Singapore for 12yrs off and on, but am bringing my girlfriend here as well. She's not local and this will be her virgin trip to the island. I'm just thinking other than the usual touristy stuff that we can do, plus hitting the start of the Great Singapore Sale, is there anything slightly different but unique to show her to?
I've booked a room at the Sentosa Resort and Spa + accompanying spa treatment and will show her the usual spots but wondering if anyone here has any good ideas for the rest of the week.
food.. bring her to the hawker centres and pig out..
(sorry... i'm not much help since we're big on gluttony here)
ermmm ... food of course ....
Singaporeans and food.... :)
Anyway, she's not really the hawker centre type, but I've already made reservations for Mezza9, Equinox and Au Jardin plus we'll be hitting the usual brunch/buffets. But again, looking for more something to do/see than eat.
could try the Buddhist Temples if it is Vesak Day.. it's a major festival for Buddhists...
if she's not the hawker type, then I suppose she'll find it hard to find other things to do here ....
there are lots to do actually ... like hiking in the nature parks, etc ....
or why not fly out for a couple of days out to tioman for the "bali hai" experience ? ...
Sounds like a plan. Probably can't do Tioman due to time constraints, but that reminds me, are there still places to rent jetskis or perhaps do rock-face climbing?
jetskis ... hmmmmm ... not that I know of .... if you're thinking of " natural" rocks ... there's a spot at the bukit timah nature reserve ....
the only other place I know are used as an SAF training ground ...
Take her to catch live music at bars-
If she likes rock-
EIC, they play at Timbre (substation) on wed, Balaclava on thursday, Wala on Friday/Sunday, Sat- Arts House.

u wanna show her more of sg by bringing her to eat all the atas non-local food? yup i'm sure she'll get to know and enjoy sg very muchie....
Thanks for the piece of advice Tare if made a bit pointedly. Anyway, I'm sure a stopover at Jumbo or some of the foodcourts at the shopping centres will do the trick. However, sorry to be annoying but any suggestions beyond introducing Singapore as a gastronomic mecca?
Angel Danger, that's a good suggestion. What kind of a live band is EIC and in your opinion are they any good? Also how crowded are these places as I've only been to Balaclava.
Thanks again all.
but tis is sg! our national past time is eat hahaha...
well, u can try to find if there's any of those free "afternoon" concerts at the durian [aka esplanade]... after a lunch at marina sq, concert at durian and maybe *gasp* singapore flyer? hahaha...
bala is CROWDED... the noise level is worse than a hawker, and most of the time ppl are standing ard... since u're staying at sentosa, why not cafe del mal [not sure abt the spelling]?
if u want mainstream clubbing scene, well... boat quey whr MOS and all others are then...
I suggest St James Powerstation since it WAS a powerstation in the past
That place is filled with history and bring her to Prima Resturant nearby then since you wanna bring her to atas places only. You can tell her it's built on top of a flour mill which is what it is
Can tell her the story that the boss of Prima Flour always wanted a resturant and that he thought his location is good coz of the view of the port so he built the resturant above his flour mill :P
Errr the Singapore Flyer (Haha) or go up the DHL balloon
Oh ya and since you are going to Equinox, you might as well drop by New Asia Bar for drinks
Enjoy the city view while at it too
And if I am not wrong, sentosa have jet skis for rent.
For a bit of culture, maybe you can bring her to the Art Museam which is the old St Joseph's and you can head over to Chijmes too and you can tell them they are both old schools converted for other uses :P
Some history too :P
bala's and wala's ... you can forget it when the band's in ...... unless you really like squeezing ...
Thanks all for the sugggestions. Will look into them.
Meanwhile just two question.
1) What is atas?
2) Wow, so many moderators in this forum. Why's that?

1) Atas = Malay word for 'High Class'

Where's your lady from? I apologise for refuting some suggestions listed above.
I would not recommend Food Republic. You could change your reservation at Mezza9 to Straits Kitchen, which is also in the Grand Hyatt. It's a restaurant that serves hawker fare, and it received a good review from Anthony Bourdain.
There's only standing room at Wala Wala (Holland Village) and Balaclava (at Suntec City and less laidback) whenever the live bands play, but EIC and The UnXpected are very good. They play popular adult rock hits.
If you don't mind rubbing shoulders with expats, Bluejade will play at Muddy Murphy's on the evening of the 24th, and they play similar music. There's space to dance in that pub and the draught drinks are very good.
Timbre has 2 outlets. EIC play at the Arts House (Old Parliament Building) outlet on Saturday evenings, and at The Substation on Wednesdays. It's a laidback, open air watering hole at either place.
I'm not a big fan of dance clubs, but I didn't enjoy my experience at Cafe del Mar. Zouk is one of the top-rated places though. And Ministry of Sound can't hold a candle to that, but there are other watering holes in nearby Clarke Quay. New Asia Bar is in the same hotel as Equinox, and if you want a quieter setting, Ink Club Bar on the ground floor has live music every night.
A visit to the Zoo and Night Safari (which are side-by-side) is pretty much set in stone, but avoid the expensive food joints there (unless it's KFC or Ben & Jerry's). The three prominent museums - Asian Civilisations Museum, National Museum of Singapore and Singapore Art Museum - are highly recommended, as is the new Peranakan Museum. Admission is free on Friday evenings.
If you're into walking tours, there are heritage trails that take you through the Civic District, Katong, Chinatown and Little India, among other places. I'm not sure if there are guides anymore though.
I may add on some more later, but if all else fails, you can always borrow Lonely Planet from the nearest library.
Tree top walks..
how about the nature walk at the new alexandra bridge?
can also go Forest Adventure (Bedok Reservoir) to do flying fox!
fly across the reservoir!
