Back from another failed sailing.
This time a bit better, managed to leave the base about 10-20 miles east of S'pore before we almost failed to get back.

Oh yeah right.
So much for state-of-the-art.
Apparently we were crusing down the busy Singapore Straits when there were merchant vessels crossing our paths.....at our 10 o'clock was an anchored vessel. So we did a starboard 15 degree to avoid the crossing vessels, and you know what?
We manged to do a 38 degree port with our port rudder which overwhelmed the 15 degree starboard with our starboard rudder and we almost left a permanent fixture on the container vessel.
Next thing you know we were ordered back to base from the higher higher-up who were sailing with us to observe this new ship.

you guys steered 15 degrees starboard and the boat bloody went 38 degrees on the port rudder and 15 degrees on the starboard rudder?
what kind of stupid boat is that?

Software glitch. Again, among many things.
This time, the main pump that powered the port rudder shut down and nobody knew. Under normal circumstances, there should have been an alarm, but this ship is a bit siao. So nobody knew the port rudder was now swinging freely.
As a result, when the order was given to turn the rudders 15 degree starboard, the starboard rudder responded, and as the ship swung right, the momentum of the ship and the water flowing caused the freely-swinging port rudder to turn 38 degrees port.
That was when everybody knew something was wrong when the ship suddenly started swinging sharply towards the anchored container vessel.
A combination of use of maximum differential engine thrusts and maximum starboard for the bow thruster and fervent praying prevented us from becoming another Courageous.
just played a round of catch with the pupsie ....
sweating like a pig now ...

Hanor hanor.
Many ships are pioneers in many things.
My ship seems to be the pioneer as far as discovering the different ways the system can fail is concerned.
