PRECISELY!!!
Fatum is constantly complaining about FT's. But I'd rather FT's stay on in Singapore and work for US, than for them to, say, move to Malaysia or Indonesia, and make them more competitive!
Having more soldiers fighting for you on the frontlines is always better.

i remember boiling when this thai lady friend of mine told me this story .... a korean farker actually used his golf club to whack his female caddy till she's down on the ground .... he's some hotshot exec on holiday here .... tried to pull lots of stunts, claiming privileges as a farang and all that shit .....
my friend, she's the HR head at the resort there, called the police and have him arrested, of course ....
even in toon town, the korean exchange students are famous for getting into fights at the clubs there .... in BC, they rove around in packs just to look for trouble .....
They do tend to be quite rude ... and that's because of their culture, which encourages social ranking.
They aren't perfect, but neither are we. I'm saying that based on resources and costs of doing business, if they spruce up their act, in a few years' time, South Korea can become pretty competitive.

It's Tuesday. My stomach says to head to Boxhill to eat Laksa Yong Tau Fu but my mind says have to stay home to revise my work!

I know everyone's talking about China and India but consider Korea. I see more and more Koreans coming over here to study / work and quite a few of them are getting good at their grasp of the English language. Once they have a sizeable young working population who is Westernised and fluent in English, they will become a force to be reckoned with. Labour costs and infrastructural costs are low there (biangz... cheapest broadband in the world, I think!), and they are innovative and constantly upgrading and using 'the latest' gadgets, and they are populous plus their work culture is quite like the Japanese, work till they almost drop dead.
You heard it here first... Korea will rise in stature in the years to come.
thanks to the popularity of korean drama serials, more and more people are getting to know korea better, and they are starting to open up to the outside world...
i'm still waiting for TX to confirm time and place for lunch!!!!!! >.<
didn't even know Hong Kong heavily rely on us for petrol & diesel
Australia's reliance on Singapore for fuel I'd knew abt it long ago

don't get me wrong .... econ's my minor, i know the importance of FTs ....
but I disagree with our FT policies, cos we are importing more peasants (and social problems), than real FTs .....
and I think citizens are being neglected over "FT"s .....

they already are ..... but they won't be as "loved" as the japanese for sure .... they aren't polite enough ....
remember my pet philosophy about how a society's TV programs reflects the psyche of her people ? ....
well ... I find lots of violence and aggression in korean dramas .... they are always hitting, screaming at each other .... or being melodramatic ..... I'll never end up with a korean girl ... and it's not because of my adversion towards surgically enhanced products ....
but .... I like kim chi though ...

Do you think that a Singaporean will want to take on the labourious kind of jobs? And btw, I won't call them FT's... just foreign labour. There's a HUGE world of difference between an FT and foreign labour.
No Singaporean will encourage their children to become road sweepers or garbage disposal drivers, or construction workers etc. Thank goodness for the Bangladeshi, PRC and Thai labourers who are in Singapore to keep Singapore clean, green, and thriving.

I've made a few Korean friends over here, and they are nothing like what the dramas depict, and not quite what the Lonely Planet guidebooks tell you to expect either.
I think they know that they are on foreign soil, so they have learnt to adapt to the culture here in order to live in harmony with everyone else.
These people, if they do return to their homeground, will bring their newfound behaviour and perspectives back with them. And if you have a young populace who's into Western trends like Singapore is, who's to say that their culture will not change?
Even traditional homogeneous Japan has changed somewhat due to its young warming up to Western ideas and lifestyles.
Don't underestimate a sleeping tiger.
anyway tat SC thread on should woman serve NS getting funny

I use the word FT interchangeably, cos the goverment seems to use it interchangeably too .... of course, there's a world of difference between the two ....
once upon a time, we'd have thai workers to build our homes, and banglas to sweep our streets, we still do, but compare the social impact these two groups have on our society ... other than a few drunken fights at golden mile, and a few molest cases from the banglas, the impact on our society is minimal ...
on the other hand ... when we start importing other countries' "peasants", we are radically altering our social landscape .... in much bigger countries like oz, canada, the US etc, they have a heartland belt which serves as repositories of their society's cultures and values .... the bush in oz, the prairies in canada, the midwest in the US ..... in Singapore, the newcomers go straight into the heartlands .... bringing with them values not always compatible with ours ....
as for "FTs" .... it's as what I've written in the post about our birth incentives ...

Yeah, dreaming! If you wanna come here to enjoy the perks post-retirement, I think you need to show them some capital. $$
My plan is the exact opposite of yours! Live and work here and save / invest as much as I can and then when I'm ready to retire, hopefully can amass enough wealth to live comfortably back home and travel frequently back to Melbourne when I kena too pissed with Singapore.
I'm very gwai today!
I managed to revise four vital chapters before my ICU posting starting tomorrow! Even managed to make memory cards for the essential data.
And all whilst participating now and then in the Jive Pad to offload some pressure!
it's time to feed patches and myself ...

I can never truely appreciate Korean movies
I'm more of a Hindi film person though it's not very popular here because it's Indian
I love the song and dances
I love the humour in the films
Yeah I agree that Hindi films are really dramatic as well but it's not that violent and they are always talking about values like love, respect, understanding and forgiveness
And yeah the men look like men

I love Korean action and horror movies! I've watched a few with plots that are extremely original and enjoyed them more than Hollywood blockbusters.
As for Korean dramas... you remember what Bear used to say about them? I watch them when I need a serious dose of mental "comfort food" and wanna be lulled into some semi-conscious state.
I don't watch Hindi movies now because I don't know where to get them over here. Besides, there are too many drama-mama's I need to tend to at work so I don't really relish watching more drama-mama's on my off days!

Hehehe the Hindi films I watch have a lot of twists and turns too
Not that drama that is over the top la
But some scenes are really funny lor I always think what the actor or actress is thinking while acting out the scene.
It's usually relaxing. I tend to buy the less serious titles. The serious titles are extremely intense and storywise I think better than Hollywood.
And the sad one I really cry buckets >.<
And these days the Hindi films have a lot of English in them
Quite a number of songs are in English too
I like quite a number of the Hindi songs actually though I dun understand what they are singing. Hahaha
