Not only were the Olympic fireworks fake, so was the singer:
BEIJING — The little girl who starred at the Olympic opening ceremony was miming and only put on stage because the real singer was not considered attractive enough, the show’s musical director said.
A member of China’s Politburo asked for the last-minute change to match one girl’s face with another’s voice, the ceremony’s chief music director, Mr Chen Qigang, said in an interview with Beijing Radio.
“We were thinking about what was best for the nation,” Mr Chen said in the interview that appeared briefly on the popular news site Sina.com yesterday before it was wiped from the Internet. “The child on camera should be flawless in image, internal feelings, and expression.”
The news follows reports that some footage of the fireworks exploding across China’s capital during the ceremony was digitally inserted into television coverage, apparently over concerns that not all of the 29 blasts could be captured on camera.
The country’s quest for perfection apparently includes its children.
Nine-year-old Lin Miaoke’s performance Friday night, like the ceremony itself, was an immediate hit, with the official China Daily yesterday hailing her as a rising star.
But the real voice behind the pigtailed girl in the red dress who wowed 91,000 spectators at the National Stadium on opening night really belonged to Yang Peiyi, 7. Her looks apparently failed the cuteness test with officials organising the ceremony, but Mr Chen said her voice was judged the most beautiful.
“We combined the perfect voice and the perfect performance,” Mr Chen said.
A picture of Peiyi posted yesterday on Sina.com showed a smiling girl with bangs and crooked teeth. A China News Service story that accompanied the photo said a China Central Television reporter asked the girl whether she felt regret over the opening ceremony.
Peiyi replied that just having her voice used for the ceremony was an honour.
But some people were angry with the switch, according to the report. One blog posting said, “Fake singing is bad, to make a lip synch is worse.”
Another said, “Leave the last bit of innocence to the children.” AGENCIES
IF the fireworks were really set off at the opening, it's not TAT bad to "add in" for better view... but the thing is, it's supposed to be live... WYSIWYG...
and the little gal case, it's just cruel and inconsiderate...
isn't it a true showcase of wat china is? a bunch of crooks out to deceive the world...
wat else can i say? i should be glad nothing have fallen and killed anyone yet...

Been watching far too much of men's basketball, beach volleyball and swimming in general.
China seems to be generating all the hype and eating up the golds like a tiger.
