you cant predict, sh*t happens. When sh8t happened, Pap can save you?. You went there out of your own will and got into trouble . think about it. Btw i have not heard of any s'poreans going to sri lanka for holidays.
btw wats the purpose of your thread?. u want to test water by coercing other s'poreans go there?
I AM IN OZ NOW AND THERE ARE TONS OF SRI LANKANS HERE. i have heard of all the horror stories. and even in colombo, they say it is not unusual to see a dead corpse rotting and lying on the road
i think all of us will need to assess the country first before going there. coz when sh*t happens, guarantee kansas will say goodbye.
a lot of people go missing in a lot of places in the world every day.BUT THEY DONT GET PUBLISCISED.

4. coercing? I don't run a tour agency. this is not a political thread otherwise i would have post them in speakers corner
5. I have friends in Sri Lanka and i think y they are all fine.
6. I have heard to horror stories in OZ too. does that mean I shouldn't visit OZ too?
7. We have our wisdom too. I wouldn't visit Afganistan now.

anywhere is fine. 1st, read and know the place well. Next, get a small group of people with common interest. Be prepare to rough it out. My first backpack was from Nepal to Tibet and we travel cheap.
aaah so nice to see this thread.. I went to Sri Lanka about 2 years ago .. and you know, It's original name is Serendip - it is the place that gave the word "serendipity' - fortunate accident.
I think it is a lovely place too - one of the things I regret buying :P (I am not usually a very touristy shopper) was one of those moonstones they have at their door. It is only available in Kandy, and carved stone is just too heavy to lug around. I regret not ordering one to ship home though!!
and if there were any corpses lying around randomly in Colombo - I didn't see them.
Another interesting thing about Sri Lanka (and its history of wars with India) is how Sri Lanka was portrayed as the home of Ravana - the demon that kidnapped Sita away in the Ramayana.
This picture depict the mystical Lake Anotatta at the foot of Mount Meru in the Himalayas. According to the legend, the four sacred rivers of India flow out of this lake through the spout in a form of a lion, a horse, an elephant and a bull. They circle the lake twenty four times before flowing into the plains. Around the lake is an Arcadian landscape with lotus pond, flowering trees, gods, dragons, lion, elephants and birds.

yes.....and in the story, hanuman used his tail as a bridge for the monkey armies to cross over to build a bridge for Rama armies. This bridge is known as Rama's bridge or Adam's bridge that can be seen from space

Hhhaa yess... actually my guide was showing me this special leaf called.. err... Hanuman's cup I think, which people believed he used to get water for Sita or something - can't remember the exact story - but I got excited and said 'Oh YEAH! I remember! Ravana and all the demons are from HERE! *cough* Faux Pas Faux Pas -
Sigiriya
This is also known as Lion Rock. This is the Abode of the Avalokitesvara, the bodhisattva of compassion (Kuan Yin). Traditionally there are 108 names of Kuan Yin, one of which is Natha(the one sitting on a lion) and is under this name that he is worshipped in Sri Lanka.

you know, I was thinking, maybe they were saving the best parts for themselves ? ....
The ancient historical record of Sri Lanka, describes King Kasyapa as the son of King Dhatusena. Kasyapa murdered his father by walling him alive and then usurping the throne which rightfully belonged to his brother Mogallana, Dhatusena's son by the true queen. Mogallana fled to India to escape being assassinated by Kasyapa but vowed revenge. In India he raised an army with the intention of returning and retaking the throne of Sri Lanka which was rightfully his.
Knowing the inevitable return of Mogallana, Kasyapa is said to have built his palace on the summit of Sigiriya as a fortress and pleasure palace. Mogallana finally arrived and declared war. During the battle Kasyapa's armies abandoned him and he committed suicide by falling on his sword.
Chronicles and lore say that the battle-elephant on which Kasyapa was mounted changed the course just to get to a better fighting position/place but the army misinterpreted it as the King fleeing. Thereafter the army abandoned the king altogether. Moggallana returned the capital to Anuradapura and turned Sigiriya into a monastery complex.

BTW, I'm happy now cause I was just grumbling months ago that 7-Eleven should open a branch across my hospital so we can get hot snacks 24/7.
Yesterday, I saw them putting up a 7-Eleven signboard on a newly-vacated store across the road! I also see lotsa lotsa toaster displays for heated food so... wheeeeee!!!
Wah 7-11 really lovely pics!!
It's really a country infused with history!!!
