you know ... I think they'd sound like those PRCs and Indians here .... they all want to get out, and when they got out, all they can talk about is how great their countries are now ...
I like to creep people out by telling them that gurkhas are here because they can be counted on to open fire on singaporeans

anyway the way I see it, the peeps that are having the slack vocations like clerks are getting the short end of the stick in ns. Yes they are having a slacker time, but you'll realise they get the least out of the 2/2.5 years spent. They don't even get fitter.... They don't even do something really useful most of the time, not to say defend the country
I don't mean that piece of cloth literally lah ..... -_-
it's about higher notions of patriotism, love of the country, service to society, etc etc .....

erm isn't that the reason they are there? I mean why else would they be more trusted than singaporeans?

the really smart ones took night classes and finished NS with a degree!! and its not true you don't learn anything as a clerk. it depends on where you get posted. I was in the thick of the action in HQ!

at the F1, when our Anthem was sung, i didn't know.. zora noticed and asked if we should stand up.. i did.. so did quite a few... a lot of people followed and the whole place stood up...
i was proud!
now.. at the podium when they played the French national anthem for the constuctors, the Frenchman sitting beside me sang every note and every word.. nay.. he shouted every word!
thing is, we don't talk about it.. we just walk it... in our own quiet way..
I wanna sleep

they are not even a paramilitary force .....
but I think they are still very useful .... imagine a race riot .... and a chinese police officer would have to take down a malay chap, or vice versa ..... but if you use a company of gurkhas to quell the riot on the other hand .......
but some nincompoops in SC imagined the goverment using gurkhas to mow down anti-goverment protesters ....
and they are used to guard sensitive places like embassies also because of their perceived neutrality ....

i still think if there is an uprising, there is an escape tunnel under the parliament to the Supreme Court where they all board that flying saucer and fly away

as I said waste of time because they could have learnt and done more if they were not stuck with NS.
+ you could do the night classes if you were lucky and got to stay out. I've known pple who got rejected from staying out or booking out to go for night classes...........
hey fatum, did you ever read starship troopers?
some interesting philosophical discussions on the concept of citizenship in there.

and i'm gonna have the exact opposite experience! at least for this week since it's Eid/Raya but more importantly, i got the deal sealed. ok, maybe gotta harass some peeps to sign on the dotted line (i think i'm getting quite good at this!).
Cool.... make sure you enjoy the "break" as much as you can....

well, NS is not going away, so unless one manages to escape enlistment altogether, it'd be better to make the best of it instead of whining for 2 years right.
and looking through SDP's paper....gawd they really are still a bunch of pacifists.

Personally I doubt it would make a difference whichever race took out the rioters. (what race are the gurkhas?)
why would they be perceived as neutral at the embassies? they still hail from whatever country they were from?

*shrugs* you ahve to make the best of whatever shit you are thrown into.
as I've said it's a waste of time for them. it's not about whining but realising the problem. and to counter all the nonsense about ns being good for the males............

they are not pacifists.. they're just idiots..
pacifists are those who will not retaliate..
idiots are those who go build a guillotine, teach someone violent how to use it then spit in that guy's face and put their heads on the block.. while complaining that they gave everyone everything but no one bothers..
