In memory of one of the two Crystal Red Shrimp : I am so heartbroken by your untimely and cruel death. Being eaten up by one of the other residents just because you are tiny and look delicious isn't too much fun, I know. I can only hope that you had a quick and relatively painless death before you became some residents' snack. I thought if I fed everyone well, no one would prey on you but apparently, greed knows no limits.
May you R.I.P.
Alright!! Which of you residents did it?! *waves cane threateningly...
Pinky, I didn't go to the pet shop at Chapel St. I went to the neighbourhood one instead, and I brought home a large 40+ L tank!! It's really cheap too! Most 23L tanks are more expensive than what I have!
I did a little landscaping too! I finally went to get that calla-lily look-alike plant on a log, 'lawn grass', and a few others... it's looking really interesting now!

see see, I know you are doomed
Rhonda you really kenna poison....
Also, the culprit who is likely to have eaten up your shrimp is likely your bumblebee goby because they are opportunistic ambush predators

It was meant to be dark humour.
I'm sad but oh well, it's a dog-eat-dog world... or rather, a fish-eat-shrimp world. At least, one of the other residents won't get any osteoporosis from calcium deficiency since the shrimp cartilage must be full of calcium and iron goodness. Siiiiiigh...
I guess whoever becomes the fattest is the culprit!
I think if I create enough hidey holes for the lone shrimp, it should survive. I wish they had the common shrimps I used to rear back in SG. Those are hardier and they are extremely greedy and active and it was really fun watching them feed themselves non-stop! Maybe, I shall go see if those shrimps are available here.
The aquarium staff confidently said that the Kuhli Loach did it! But how can it when it's mouth is like a tiny 'o' shape?
I'm still wondering who did it! I don't wish to wrong any resident... Hmm... maybe if the remaining shrimp disappears too, I'll fashion a little 'prison' out of the green plastic strawberry punnets and capture it inside and keep it in a corner as punishment!
this is just hilarious
not LF destroying a weighing machine hilarious but close.
can any of these critters be eaten, and how would you propose we cook them?

I think so too... every other residents' mouths are too tiny to be vicious predators. But the bumble bee gobies have the largest mouths of all.
But... what to do... I love them the most and the reason why I decided to have an aquarium again in the first place is cause I love them gobies. I feel as if even if they committed a huge error, I can't bring myself to punish them...
I'm eyeing an albino catfish and a spotted catfish that's really pretty. They are teeny enough to be residents.
My tank is now so huge that all I see are plants! Everyone's in hiding atm!

*punches lau right in the nose!
Aaaaahhhhh... fresh blood pouring... pouring...
Pinky, got question for yer... do you use pebbles or gravel in your tanks?
Erhmm can I have the names of the catfish you wanna buy
If they are corys they are fine
Because there are a lot of giant predators in the aquarium trade sold as cute tiny fishes and they don't tell the buyers how large they grow.
I use fine coral sand for my aquarium
Also, gobys might be small but they are predators in the wild.
I'm very sure it's the goby and not the loach

Yeah... the loach's mouth is too tiny and I too believe that the gobies are highly suspicious. I've seen them 'attack' each other before. And during feeding time, they bully everyone else whilst they eat the lion's share. They kinda love to guard the food.
They seem rather peaceful and are mainly scavengers so my Kuhli Loach isn't the culprit.
Seems like I'll have to purchase maybe 4-5 more Loaches at least because if kept singly, you will hardly see them at all cause they'll be hiding all the time! No wonder my loach only makes guest appearances!
Pinky, do you use a gravel cleaner? I never saw one before till just now when I saw them using it to clean the gravel. It works like a vacuum cleaner!
Oh... this write-up about the Bumble-Bee Goby is sooooo amusing!!
"Bumblebee gobies are grumpy. They will not school with other species of fish easily, if ever. Their faces seem to give them away, with their permanent frown and drooping corners to their mouths.
"If bumblebee gobies were homeowners, they would be the type that cut only their side of the hedge, and would daily measure their borders just to make sure that their land stayed their own. They are highly territorial, but are prone to frequently move house too, never really approving of their neighbors. If you keep bumblebee gobies and see them randomly fighting, they are attempting to set up borders of a territory, and it's little to worry about; damage is very seldom done if they are not overstocked.
"Feeding can be quite a chore. Because they are ambush predators, preferring the "wait until it floats right past" method of hunting, they can be difficult to feed with frozen foods, and practically impossible to feed with dried or flake foods.
Orh... so for the first week or two, they pretend to be 'friendly' and harmless to the shrimps so when the shrimps drop their guard, they ambushed one and made a snack out of it!
The gobies are soooooo like some of the people we know! The act-sweet, "I just wanna be your friend" aka "I care about you, really" type who are just using their fake-as(s) facade to try and trick you into becoming comfortable with them so when you least expect it, they will get what they want out of you and suck you dry!
But when they attack, they make sure that it's as stealthy as possible so that the others are none the wiser about their dark side so that someday in future, they can makan on the others too.
Maybe that's why sometimes, I see the gobies doing some strange 'head-on collision' thing with the tetras when they were all in the tiny tank. Boy, am I glad I got a much larger tank so everyone can flee and hide!!!
No. My tank is too deep to use a gravel cleaner
You can get yourslef a under gravel filter you know

Don't like them. Say, I saw them using a large gravel cleaner for their really large and deep pond-like tanks! They have various sizes. I think that I can only get a small one and clean carefully because I've planted aquatic plants in my tank.
I'm going to shop for a few more ornaments. I saw a Chinese pavilion that I like and am thinking of getting that and building a little slope along one back corner of the tank.
I'm also thinking of getting a few different-sized small terracotta pots to place near the front in different angles and maybe line the insides with moss so the residents can retreat into the hidey-holes.
I have a bunch of greedy cichlids at home
They all crowd to the front of the tank when they see us now >.<

Ya you can
If your turtle now have a carapace of 5" and above, it is legal to keep
Anything below that is illegal coz if it is 5" and above, it means they were bought before the ban.
Mine have a carapace of 8" :)
Ok, MPB bought 2 baby Gulpers
1 is very black and the other is brown
And he named them 黑 and Mr Brown -_-"

/me oinks in unison... Hanor! Hanor!! What's happening there?
OK, veering off-course to a different subject, my spanking new 40L aquarium is looking really spiffy! I managed to get the water crystal clear and this time round, I splurged on real aquatic plants for a little landscaping aka aquascaping. I have what looks like 'lawn grass' in front of my ol' bridge and I finally bought that driftwood with that calla-lily-like plant!
The day before, I mourned for what I thought was the untimely demise of my last Crystal Red Shrimp. But last night, late into the night, the little fellow came out of hiding from his new hidey hole(s) in the driftwood! Oh, I was sooooo happy and relieved!! I figured that if I created enough small crevices and hidey-holes for the shrimp, it will be able to flee from the gobies.
This morning, I managed to find an online forum where there appears to be lots of shrimp lovers (not the makan sort ah!) and breeders here in Melbourne! Cherry Red Shrimps, Bee Shrimps, Crystal Reds... they sell them at pretty good prices too! Can even get Crystal Red Grade A shrimps here!
OK... a bit too soon to think about it, but I kinda wanna have a separate tank now for shrimps.
