I know you probably mean it light-heartedly but therein is the flaw of such a system, where we keep expecting and pushing for growth everywhere to the detriment of the environment and our health.
Oh, about energy-saving bulbs and fluorescent lights....they're actually not good for our eyes, and environmentally unfriendly to dispose of. It's a trade-off.

Pray tell, how does one spend more when money is tight in the first place?
I now download movies and TV shows instead of going to the cinema or buying DVDs. And read books for free at Borders.

It's very true. Everything goes in a cycle, it's about balancing the equation :3

I guess the issue here is how to get people to spend when they are at risk of pay cuts and retrenchments.
Originally posted by Meia Gisborn:Oh, I forgot about that. I've replaced almost all of the incandescent light bulbs in my house with the energy-saving compact flourescent ones earlier this summer. The electricity bill I received for the first full billing period in which the new bulbs were utilized, was about 30% less than the previous month's bill.
I also tape transparent insulation film over all the window openings in winter to reduce heat loss; the furnace kicks in less as a result, reducing my natural gas bills.
Waaaah!! *applause! applause!!
I did think of buying a tube of caulking glue or whatever you call it to kinda seal the old old windows in my apartment, where I can feel a draft coming through. But honest to goodness, I have no idea how it really works, what to do, how to do a good, tidy job with it and what not and so I thought, better not, skarli do more harm than damage!

If I had the cash....I wouldn't be spending it anyway.

This is right up my alley. It's easy, you can't mess it up. Get a caulk gun and the right type of caulk for windows and doors. Applies just like a syringe. To make it swee swee, use your finger to smoothen it out and get it into the crevices. Here's tip to prevent the caulk from sticking to your fingers - wet your finger with saliva. HTHs.
Check your door frame too. You if you feel a draft, weather stripping will help seal the gaps.

Since you're paying rent, shouldn't the landlord be doing that for you?
I am spending less than $21 per week on food. That is less than $1 per meal. Don't think I can cut back anymore.
However,I think I need to spend more to help the economy.I will be taking vacation once every month till the end of Q1'09.
I waiting for car yards here to go bust n go for thier 2nd hand cheapo awesome cars. LoL!
I am spending. Soon. Next year March. hahaha

I try to minimise contact with the landlord because he's extremely frustrating to deal with. He hems and haws, makes promises he seldom keeps, and then comes up with 1,001 fanciful excuses and what-not. Hell, dealing with him makes me feel as if I'm back at work, facing some of them patients. I consider this making use of his property to learn caulking so that when I have my own property, I can do it like jetta, swee swee!

I used to think that because I don't know anything about cars and because I don't have a reliable guy friend who knows enough about cars, I shouldn't purchase 2nd hand cars cause I'll be fleeced worse than the lambs!
But I've since made a friend who tells me that his Aussie Chinese mechanic is very reliable and has been his trusted mechanic for more than a decade and before he purchases his 2nd hand cars, he always pays this bloke to do a thorough check and so far, he's been happy with his services.
Seeing how low the prices of 2nd hand cars can be, I just might forget about getting a brand new car and instead, get a 2nd hand one. In any case, for all you know, in a recession, people may be 'getting rid' of their 2nd or 3rd cars, which might just be almost spanking new!

Good question.Let me come back to you on that one.

You are in Sg now right ? Just get the 2nd hand car that has reliable services. Like Toyota , Nissan . Easy parts and good servicing with gurantees so u can bust thier balls if anything goes wrong with ur service. If u service ur Toyota at a Authorised Toyota dealer shop n he cant fix ur car. N its like 2006-2008 .. u can call the manager out to talk to u about it. lol. Thats one way if u are uncertain with ur mechanics. I always send my cars to the authorised dealers. My dad always wants me to send to his personal mechanic.. but no thanks. I'll take my chances. haha
Because the car dealers are now facing the crunch. Here 2nd hand S2000 auction at 13K..immaculate condition n gone only 80K for an NA engine car its good. OMG i did not go to that one. N apparently only lilke 5 ppl bid for it. CHEAP !!!!!! OMFG! lol
Well, nowadays the brand spanking new cars thier price will eventually drop also. So it really depends. But now u have more power to negotiate ma right ? If u got an old and busted people mover... time to let it go. I doubt they will take in trade in, but its still a good deal. LoL. keep the old car n go car rolling with it.
Some cars.. gone 2K KM's 2nd car lo.. n that will be a very good deal. ;p
Exactly on some ppl cannot afford to finance all thier cars so have to let go. Like i letting go my Civic. So whoever buying it gonna untung cause gone lesss then 3 K n i am selling back to Honda.
by going on a diet
Eat out less often.
Switch appliances when not in use ( i always forget to off ).
Stay at home and go out less often.
Dont on air con.
Ermm, i think thts all.
