Why deserts produced holy men?

  The current recession reminds us how fragile and fleeting material success is and points to the desert fathers for hope..

  Why deserts produced holy people?The place grows nothing,dry and when wind comes one must cover the eyes to prevent sand from entering one eyes...maybe I'm missing the point here..in short why people go to desert and turned saints
