Please. You first day know me is it?
The most I can handle in a year is... 1 book.
And would League of Extraordinary Bookworms be a better title?
OH MY GOSH!!! The Australian newsreader just committed a grave English error!!
"... a historic event "
which is wrong cause it's a silent 'h' for 'historic' and therefore, it should have been "AN historic event".
I'm sure I'm right...
historic .. is silent H meh?

Keii, one book in a year does not an 'extraordinary' bookworm make leh!
But ok... I get your drift.

You'd be surprised.
Many people think that it is correct to say, "an historic event." Of course, the indefinite article is "a" when followed by a consonant sound ("a boy"), and "an" when followed by a vowel sound ("an ace"). The sound is what is important, not whether the word actually begins with a consonant or a vowel.
For example, "a uniform" is correct because "uniform" begins with a "y" sound. Similarly, "an honest man" is correct because "honest" begins with a vowel sound; the "h" is silent. In some languages, Cockney English in particular, "h" is always silent.
And so, we hear "an historic event" or "an historian." "H" is a soft (the softest) consonant. The phrase should be "a historic event." The American dictionaries and grammar books tell us that "an historic event" is British or an attempt to sound educated or superior.

No meh?
History not silent 'h', but 'historic' is silent 'h'.
Just like 'economy' and 'economics' are kinda pronounced differently although they both begin with 'e'.
'Economy' (ee-conomy)
'Economics' (air-ker-no-mics)
Well, at least that's what my Sec 1 English teacher taught us.

Anyways, thanks... I'll go clarify with my British friends to see if they are aware of this common error or not.

Haha no problemo.
But I wouldn't think of it as a common error. Maybe a common misunderstanding or a preference of word usage.
I'd use "a historic" only cause it sounds more fluent, and not choppy as "an historic".

x2 .. it doesn't sound as jarring as "an historic" ...
I used to go through like at least 5 books a week
But these days I don't even think I read 10 books a year :x
I read more newspapers and err graphical novels these days more than books
I'm making myself read at least 1 book a month now
So 12 books for 2009 :P
i only like to read lousy fantasy books from some authors that don't challenge my mind =D
does setting a 0 book target make me extraodinary in the league of extraordinary readers?

av and Ferret, since you are both so bored most of the time, can I commit the two of you to read 20 books each?

I read about 2 every week
Reading for me doesnt require a commitment lah. I actually read everyday....

buy loh.
u think drop from sky ?
Books are freaking ex sia. 30+ Library is an alternative but good books are always borrowed.
Usually I tour used book shop. Books are never old. I got the book 40 Laws Of Power at just 9.90 at Bras Pasah. The downside to touring used bookstore is that a lot of time is needed to search for the books u want as the store owner does not categorise the books specifically.
Another thing which i do is to buy books for friends as gifts. I bought lots of books during christmas and i am going to borrow them to read someday
