You have to admit that it DOES break the monotony! If you're reading 'heavy' books, it can be really hard to just sit through with one.
However, when I pick up a good medical thriller, I can forget to eat, forget to drink, forget everything else but just get so engrossed in it until I finish reading it!
And I have a habit of writing down the characters' names and who they are in the front page of my novels sometimes, especially when there are tons of characters involved in the plot. I remember the Club 30 folks like Pinky were laughing at me when they saw it.
av, your tally doesn't seem quite right... what's your updated tally?

It's heartening that Borders in Victoria is appealing for donations of 2nd hand books in good condition to re-stock the schools and libraries that have been destroyed in the Victorian bushfires. They are even going to match the donations up to $200,000.
Wonder how you guys read so fast, I only manage to finish 2 books. The Game of Thrones by George R.R Martin and The American Gods by Neil Gaiman. Both borrowed from neighbourhood libraries, I read so slow that I need to renew the borrowed duration. Brilliant original fiction by both authors.
The American Gods is GOOOOD.
Eh.. can add me in your list, Rhonda? I'm aiming to read 10 books this year! (dunno got time or not, but I'll try!) ;)

William Shakespeare on the Art of Love:
The Most Eloquent Love Passages in Shakespeare's Plays and Poetry - Includes All 154 Sonnets.
The beauty and meaning behind his poetry and prose has meant that Shakespeare's work has lived on throughout history long after his death. We still fall in love and become passionate, or jealous, or dim-witted, or melancholy, or dreamy, or vengeful, or courageous on behalf of a loved one. We still use language with outlandish imagery or moving simplicity of expression to attempt the impossible - that is, distil the essence of love into words. Shakespeare achieved this alchemy of the imagination as no other writer before or since. Here, in a beautiful volume to treasure, we offer wonderful words on love in all its moods, in verse and prose, from the poetry and the plays - with a brilliantly illuminating introduction and commentary from a Shakespeare scholar. From the star-crossed Romeo and Juliet, and the witty Benedick and Beatrice, to the broody passion of Othello and the Dark Lady of the sonnets, there is so much here to admire, enjoy and be moved by.

For those who would love a humorous short story that tickles your wits:
The Law-Twister Shorty, by Gordon R Dickson.
This story follows a high school graduate, Mal, who gets inexplicably bundled off to a planet under "emergency orders" upon graduation with no orders given to him other than: "just follow your instincts".
His mission: To rescue 3 tourists who were "kidnapped" as orphans to be raised by a female Dilibian (native bear-like alien) named Gentle Maiden who was actually nothing of that sort. As it is, Mal is just as clueless as to what to do as the readers and that's the ticklish point of the story.
But there's more than meets the eye. The main theme of this story is: Manipulation, manipulation, and more manipulation!
Mal (who gets named Law-Twister because he attempts to manipulate the Dilibians), tries to manipulate the Dilibians to resuce the "hostages". He is in turn manipulated by the humans who sent him there to study how to interact with the Dilibians. And they in turn, are knowingly manipulated by the Dilibians to their individual advantages!
Basically only the hero of the story was clueless till the end, when he manages to figure out exactly wtf is going on...eg the order: follow your instincts, the 3 idiot tourists who refused to get rescued army style etc etc.
Essentially, until the end of the story, nothing made sense at all.
Just how good does the manipulation get? Here's a scenario which I found seriously hilarious. It goes something like this:
Mal moved a ten-foot tall "solid" granite law-stone 10 paces in order to change the laws to secure the release of the 3 humans...which was of course an impossible case, unless...the rock was....hollow!
So Mal, decides to be honest to the Dilibian clan's grandpa: Do you know that the rock is hollow?
Grandpa: Don't be lame...of course it is not!
Mal: How is a Shorty like me able to move that 10 foot tall rock in that case unless it is hollow?
Grandpa: Exactly!
Mal: Huh?!
Grandpa: We saw it with our own eyes! You were huffing and puffing, with your eyes popping! You see...it stands that...if it IS hollow, you would have been able to lift the rock easily, right?
And of course, Mal had nothing else to say.
Thus is the degree of the manipulation our poor hero suffered.
If you want a good laugh....well, this is the story for you.
forgot to update, i finished <Train Man> during my 2D2N "getaway" LOL
