What with the bleak economic forecast, I'm just wondering how we'd all be celebrating our CNY this year.
- Will you buy new outfits for CNY? Budget? How many suits? Already bought?
- What will be the most expensive food item on your table this year? Do you intend to scale back on food for the Reunion Dinner?
- Those who are giving out ang pow's, what are your plans?
etc etc.
Even if we can't afford to celebrate CNY like we used to all the previous years, we can at least talk about it and get a bit excited over it.
This yr CNY expenses cutting by half.
New clothes? Nah... not visiting anyone, no occasion to buy new clothes. Besides, I've too many clothes already, and quite a few outfits still unworn. I don't need more. My one and only tiny wardrobe is already spilling out!
Food... think I'll wait until just before or after CNY when the prices of the CNY goodies drop before purchasing. Right now, a container or Egg Rolls from Malaysia / Singapore costs AUD12.00!!! Pineapple Tarts and Peanut Cookies from Malaysia / Singapore are also over AUD10.00 now. Everything is overpriced right now so I'll give it a pass and wait...
Ang Pow's... haven't received any since I came over to Australia. Out of sight, out of mind...
I'm curious as to how jetta, MG, fairlady, VK and littlestream will celebrate CNY as we are all overseas.

Thts why we have spring cleaning.

I don't really have clothes to discard. Most of them were bought here and I've only been here... gee, almost three years liao!
I don't do spring cleaning here... messy or not, it doesn't really matter cause I live alone, I don't invite anyone over, and most importantly, mom's not around to nag me!
. Ur house must looked like any singles house, a warzone.
Actually, my one-bedroom apartment here is much smaller than the two-bedroom HDB apartments. It's also smaller than the one-bedroom HDB rental apartments for the low-income earners. There's also not a lot of storage areas, concealed or otherwise, so storing your vaccuum cleaner, ladder, suitcase, etc is a challenge.
There's also only ONE built-in wardrobe where I TRY to stuff all my clothes, thick winter blankets and throws, bedspreads, handbags, etc and it's really impossible! Winter coats are very thick so they take up a lot of space too. I thought of getting those vacuum storage bags but they sure aren't cheap!
I get the festive atmosphere when I head to Boxhill, where there is a large population of PRC's, Hong Kong'ers and possibly Malaysians and Singaporeans. Victoria Street, where there are lots of Vietnamese, is not so festive in comparison. I should head home for CNY one of these days...

There's not much to cut back on for us. I'll probably wear only a new T-shirt (as usual), the reunion dinner is homecooked (as usual), the only decoration that needs replacing is the pussy willow (nothing new). Tidbits were bought from the church.

Sounds like you are very prepared for CNY.
CNY for me has always been simple. home cooked dinner, and we don't buy much cny goodies either,.
Think my mum would have bought all the CNY goodies by the time I get home on New Year's eve. I have bought 4 cans of Abalone for mum though.
Not planning to buy any new outfits. My family and relatives are likely to see me in shorts and singlet/T-shirt during CNY.
As for red packets, probably only give to my young cousins, my niece, nephew and my parents.
This is the the most expensive CNY since we are married as this is our first CNY with my family as a married couple.
cheapest ever (i think)...
only cut and color my hair couple weeks back (essential cos need to cover white hairs)...
haven't got clothes for cny... prob wear a tee tat's NOT too old looking + old jeans (like last yr)... but MAYBE need to get something tat's NOT black or white cos need to go visiting with
angbao, tis yr i'm NOT giving wahahaahahahaaa
cny goodies, say no need to buy... unless i wanna buy to eat it myself (which i'll just go back home to eat and maybe tabao hehehehee)
the only thing tat is bothering me is... springcleaning *sob sob* now not staying alone, means i have to clean the whole house *gulp*

thankfully the worst part of the springcleaning is over for me (taking down the curtains and having them cleaning and then putting them up again. I'm the only person at home who can climb up and down to get at them).
what is left is annual preventive maintenance for my stereo. this involves disconnecting all signal and power cables, cleaning up the components and cleaning and treating all plugs/jacks/plated surfaces with craig progold. speakers drivers are given an application of anti-mould liquid.
Not bought anything new yet
I don't think I want to buy anything since we are running out of hangers, plus most of my dresses I only have worn them like once only
No CNY decorations. Too much hassle to put up and take down
TBH it's just like any other day except giving out ang baos and the reunion dinner
Even for visiting we cut down a lot of places this year

It's very hot during Summer here and it's so hot that your makeup literally melts! So unless you're an office worker who can hide in the aircon, I don't know how those Aussie women can tahan putting on all their layers. I noticed they like heavy eye makeup here. Thick mascara and the works. Thank goodness there's industrial strength paint... oops, sorry, I meant, mascara these days.
