When I was in queensland, I never had such nonsense.
Tell me about it. I was watching the Williams/Kuznetsova match yesterday and just made it through two sets before making a beeline for the corporate tent - even then the air-conditioning there was struggling.
Eventually common sense kicked on and they closed the roof of the Rod laver Arena - Serena's serves went from 130 km/h up to 180 km/h.

OK, the weather channel states that it's 41 deg C in Melbourne now, 43 deg C later. Yesterday, they predicted it will hit 45 deg C today. And we have two more days of hellfire...
yikes. over here anything above 30 deg C and I'm whinging already!

I know about fans and heat. I was in Sydney some time back, there was a heatwave, my friend's car couldn't even start. Finally they managed to get the car started (by putting towels soaked with water on the engine), we were driving along, there was no air con in the car, they kept the windows shut. I was thinking why do you keep the windows shut when it so warm in the car. I unwound the window felt the breeze, then decided it's not a bad idea to keep the windows shut afterall. It felt like hairdryer blowing directly at your face.
Yeah! On the Weather Channel just now, they are encouraging people to stay indoors, shut the doors and windows, and turn on their fans / air conditioners or head to the air-conditioned malls and stay there to escape the heat. My apartment is much cooler now with the windows and door shut.

Gedanken, any idea why the Australian Open MUST be held during the hottest months of the year? I've often wondered why can't the organisers hold it in late Summer or even any of the other seasons of the year.

I think this heat wave has converted my family into non-whingers now. My bro's MIL and FIL were commenting yesterday evening, as we stood on the balcony, that NOW, they know what "hot" really means! Then they added, "It's never so bad in Singapore!" Betcha they will not whinge anymore!
Tennis is a summer sport ..
And, because its the school holidays, they are able to get more ball boys and gals to temp during the holidays? (this is a wild guess by my sis)
And I think, perhaps because all the other grand slams, major tournaments have their own dates already, so australian open is only left with this period?
I hope to be able to go watch a grand slam final match in real sometime ...

I love my aircon!!
I am extremely concerned ... the three loaches in my aquarium are all in a mad frenzy, zipping across and all over the aquarium, protesting the rising water temp! More ice cubes into the tank...

Normally it's not so bad, although it's my main opportunity to get my colour back every year. As [insert Chinese characters here] says, it's a summer sport.
I don't have the photos on me at the moment, but when I get home I can post a couple of shots to show how hot it was yesterday.

I had to wait 20 mins for a tram that was very late yesterday and the few of us at the tram stop that thankfully had a shelter from the overhanging roof of a shop beside the stop, were extremely irritated. Four trams passed by in the opposite direction before ours turned up and then two of them turned up at the same time. I was worried that some kinda breakdown had occured.
It's frightening... all I have to do is stand at the foot of my block, and I can see the hot air rising up, creating a blurred illusion akin to what you see in desert movies!
I feel really sorry for that 75-yr old man and 24-yr old man who probably died of heatstroke. Imagine dying whilst waiting for the tram!! Or dying whilst walking 500 m to your parked car!!
water parade ! ....
Apparently a train driver had a heart attack at Springval Station this morning - jammed up the works for about an hour.
Yesterday's heat was no joke - the sunlight felt like it almost had physical force.

Poor train driver! I hope he survives!
I can't watch TV now because my couch feels hot!
I'm still finding it amazing that my 40L aquarium can see an increase in its water temp up 6-7 deg C!!
am pretty glad i decided not to head to melbourne for CNY

Beats the kid who got chucked off the West Gate by her old man this morning. Bring back the death penalty, I say.
One of the two air-conditioners in my office has given up the ghost, and apparently the repairmen are up to their armpits in work so they may not get round to fixing it for a while yet. Bugger this - I'm coming to work in shorts and flip-flops tomorrow.
The Age and/or The Herald Sun should distribute some kinda decal sticker or badge to declare that "I've survived the worst heat wave since 1908!"

Shorts and flip flops... and bare-chested?!

The rail operator has so far cancelled 58
trains today and is warning of mass delays and distruptions as the
extreme heat buckles rail lines and causes a raft of train faults.
A
buckled track near Jolimont station has also forced trains on the
Hurstbridge and Epping lines to run through the city loop in an
anti-clockwise direction, The Herald Sun reports.
Connex's
website also succumbed to heat stress today as thousands of commuters
flooded the site seeking train information, but spokesman John Rees said details of cancelled and delayed trains were still being displayed.
Mr Rees said the situation could get worse despite all the preparations by the network prior to the heatwave.
"It (the network) will be stressed this afternoon, absolutely definitely," he said.
"I think this evening is going to be very very challenging indeed."

For what it's worth, here's a few photographs from Sunday:
I caught Federer's headband when he threw it into the crowd after the match.
