Just out of curiosity, I checked Melbourne's weather forecast for the next week on Weather.com, and it seems you guys will be in the mid-80s (°F) for highs into next week, with the real cool-down happening thereafter.
So relief is on the way. Hang in there, and drink plenty of fluids!

yea, actually today's so much better already. its (only) mid-30s celcius this afternoon.
in fact, it's cooling now with nice breeze blowing into the house as i type.....sweet relief.
Originally posted by Gedanken:Rhonda, using the fan may actually be a step backwards. You're accelerating evaporation, and with less water volume, the temperature increase will actually accelerate. I'd stick with adding cold water and ice - if anything, add more water to slow down the temperature change.
I'm in T-shirt and jeans today - I hate casual Fridays!
To be honest, I was debating with myself : to lift the cover or not to lift the cover? To direct the fan at the tank or not (because it seemed like it was only blowing hot air, which wouldn't help much at all). But I was so very desperate that my fishes not die that I wasn't thinking straight.

Yeah! Today's not so bad, compared to the past three days of hellfire!
I have almost all the windows in my apt wide open now because there's a lovely cool breeze. I'm toying with the idea of leaving my main door open and just have the screen door locked for tonight. It should be fine since there are two security gates in the compound.
(I'm just hoping that the Huntsman spiders will not crawl into my house!!! )
I have been having massive abdominal bloating from all that ice water that I've been consuming non-stop. I'm currently probably suffering from water drunkenness!

Yeah!
And oh, kindly recommend a state in the US with lovely cool weather year round, with no natural calamities, and a relatively low crime rate.

AAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!
*Pulls hair, whimpers, stomps feet, and runs!!
It remains unconfirmed, but it's suspected that more than 20 sudden deaths during this period of heat wave is most likely due to heat stroke!
And I am soooo thankful that my area did not suffer from any power outtages at all! PHEW!!
Thank God it is all over! Sunday's heat was tame in comparison and this morning, we welcomed a very short drizzle! Today's weather has been cool with gentle breezes. Aaaaah!!
What are these Spiders attracted to?
Plant bait all over Rhonda's house.

I'll swat them all in your direction!

Imagine a whole swarm of them laying siege to your house.
Ermmmm.......you have to swat extremely hard.

Erm... actually, I don't think Huntsman spiders 'swarm'. They are somewhat solitary and come together only when mating. PHEW!!!
I swat with a tennis racket! *spiiiing!!

i went to glen waverly on (i think) thu to the library to seek refuge and guess what, there's power outtage there and for the rest of the shops there. all those who sell fresh produce like poultry and fish all cursed and swear. shops mostly closed. so, i proceeded to centro glen and after dropping my family off, i struggle to find a car lot....... :-(
agree the drizzle today is 2 thumbs up.

plus they are harmless too....i just shoo them away if they come near my living area....not sure where u live but the city of whitehorse council (where i am in) do produce a nice poster that details all common insects and bugs in the area. i stick the poster up in my kids' room so they find out more about them and hopefully overcome their fear and come to terms with living with these creepy crawlies in peace.

Whitehorse Council? As in Whitehorse Road, Boxhill? Gee, I'm always heading to Boxhill on Tram 109 for makan! I love the Dai Pai Tong there! I also love the grocery shops there. One of my Singaporean friends went there with me and exclaimed, "Oh! This place looks very much like Ang Mo Kio!"

Oh, one of my Aussie friends drove to the Kew Library on Saturday to try to escape the heat but it was jam-packed so she left.
She told me of how one time, Victoria Gardens in Burnley suffered a power failure during a heat wave and Coles ended up discarding all of their raw meat and fish and a quite a few frozen products. My friend told me of how the residents of Kew were then made to pay a small token sum for the construction of some sort of electrical facility in our neighbourhood to ensure a smooth flow of electricity and since then, Kew and Richmond and I think, Camberwell or something, no longer suffered from brownouts. *knocks on wood.
I found it so amusing that my Aussie friend lost the connection for her home phone and Telstra found out that it was because the Optic Fibres for the phone lines underground had MELTED in the heat!!
Not surprising since the ground temp is usually a few degrees higher than the official temp given by the weather report, which is actually temp that's taken IN THE SHADE! When it was officially 43 deg C, my thermometer, placed on the concrete ground under the sun, actually read 48.5 deg C!

i just had beef brisket noodle at `dai pai tong' on friday with me wife! she like the crispy noodle.
actually, boxhill looks more like a part of hong kong.

I love the Laksa Yong Tau Fu at Dai Pai Dong! The Prawn Hor Fun is also very good! The first time I tried it a few weeks ago, I counted 13 medium crunchy prawns, a heap of bok choy, and a very generous scoop of gravy, which was a tad too saltish.
I love their big meat pao and their char siew pao too. Their cheong fun is also not bad. Their congee is way too saltish though.
The grocery shops at Boxhill seem to be more hygienic than the Vietnamese ones in Victoria St.
How long have you been here, redDust?

Oh yeah. Everytime there's a power shortage, they give away the ice cream for free. Better than seeing it all go to waste. I don't think it's lucky to be around when they are giving away free ice cream... because it'll mean that you're in a vicinity with no air-conditioning, no fans, and you're just all melting away in the heat!
