It is soooo NOT amusing when one Aussie friend of mine with mixed heritage but whose mom is a Singaporean Chinese related an incident to me whereby her Caucasian Aussie colleague, who married a PRC, thought that Singaporeans speak 'really bad English' after watching... was it Under One Roof or Phoa Chu Kang in the SBS channel in cable TV.
My friend jumped to our defense and told him that not all Singaporeans speak like that and that most of us have very good English standards.
See where this hawking of Singlish is getting us to on the international front? It's making foreigners think that the PRC's speak better English than us!!!
Whilst a little bit of Singlish here and there is entertaining, too much is just irritating!
There is no need to let the world think that we are behind the PRC's when it comes to spoken English!! -

That's their problem! I just hate it when people think that we are worse than PRC's!
Seriously though, if I'm a foreigner, and I look at the posts in the forums, I'd be shaking my head, thinking, "This country claims that English is their 1st language? Tsk! Tsk!"
I shudder to think of the day when countries like the PRC, Korea and Malaysia overtake us in terms of their fluency in English. If that day comes, I'll forsake citizenship in utter shame.

It's ok when foreigners know that Singlish is what Singaporeans break into when we're with each other, but not if they think that Singlish IS our official standard!
I speak and write in Singlish too, but I'm mindful of when I use it and how much I use it.
