BTW cassie, why will this be a 'long weekend' for you?
but the truth is, singlish is the official spoken standard. and i've reached that conclusion after living in singapore for....many many years. hehe. but i dont understand why singaporeans have to be so ashamed of it. or why they have to shun it. different pple speak english in different ways. why is it that people (in singapore) like 'american', 'australian', 'british', 'scottish', etc accents/dialects so much but not like their own...

I did not say we must put on some fake-ass accent. Just speak proper English. We have our own Singaporean accent that is distinguishable.
It's alright... not everyone will understand what I'm trying to get at until they encounter foreigners mocking Singaporeans for the really horrible and lousy standards of English. And when they say our neighbours have 'better English' than we do, and it's not even our neighbours' 1st Language, it sucks... royally!
mebbe =P cos i have not really met people who have mocked people in singapore for their singlish...
but most of the people i know who mock 'singlish' are....singaporeans and ohhh! remember that taiwanese (or japanese) show? hehe.
i dont consider singlish to be a bad thing. neither does my linguistics class. and the foreigners i know who come to singapore usually try to learn singlish. and 10 years later, i still get people saying 'so how are you lah'. (cos all they learn is the 'lah' >.< ) but they mean well!
then again, there was also this huge discussion in class on what 'proper' english is....

Seriously though, if I'm a foreigner, and I look at the posts in the forums, I'd be shaking my head, thinking, "This country claims that English is their 1st language? Tsk! Tsk!"
I shudder to think of the day when countries like the PRC, Korea and Malaysia overtake us in terms of their fluency in English. If that day comes, I'll forsake citizenship in utter shame.
My boss spends his time editing the English written on the emails by the Canadians to us and nags to me at the same time to pay attention and that most Ang Mos English isn't very good.
I don't have a problem with Singlish
But I think it should not be used in certain situations
you should have been in my first year english class in uni.
they couldnt even get basic spelling right. bloody hell! >.< and we had to do a lot of peer grading. pissed me off big time.
worst thing? YOU CAN'T DEDUCT MARKS FOR BAD SPELLING!!!!!!! (when it comes to the small assignments) this is seriously WTF????!!!!
The average Singaporean student who has been diligent in school will have a better standard of English than the Aussie counterpart. One of my Singaporean friends here was saying that her children enjoy school here tremendously, because 'the schools are kinda not allowed to fail anyone'!!!
Singlish is part of our heritage and like it or not, it's here to stay. I only have an issue with it when foreigners who have no idea at all about Singapore, form their first impressions about Singapore from Singlish.
I almost wanted to smack a PRC on the mouth once when she very arrogantly declared, "I've worked in Singapore before, and you Singaporeans speak funny English!" I wanted to shout back at her, "Oh really? Better than your fake-ass horrible imitation accent!" but it happened in the workplace so I just complained to the Team Leader that it's borderline discrimination and that this person has something against 'other nationalities'.

TMD WBD! I cannot stand that bloody arrogant b!tch! She talks with this horrible accent, but she thinks she's got the Aussie accent , and she's learnt to imitate the ways of the Aussies, and she's weaseled herself into their culture. When she first came over to work, she was apparently warned that she'll be sent back to PRC if she doesn't improve her language skills cause no one could understand her, so for survival's sake, she has to catch on fast.
She managed to hook herself an Indian Cardiac surgeon and is forever boasting about it to all who'd listen, and even all who won't listen. She loves to boast about her big house in this expensive neighbourhood, how it costs more than AUD 1 million, blah blah. And she won't stop talking because I think she's so vain she loves the sound of her voice and her accent.
But you know what, people like that will be very successful here, because they know how to milk the cow for what it's worth. Put on a fakey front, impress the Aussies, ingratiate yourself to them, and pile on the PR charms, and you've got it made!

Her fakey Aussie accent gets her understood, and they all like the effort she's making to be like them. I guess they feel worshipped in a sense! She just gives me a headache cause she won't stop talking, and very loudly too.
Hmm... I just rejected a shift cause I don't think I can sleep in this heat. Very naughty...

an accent is different from singlish.
singlish is a bunch of words no one understands.
its like going to liverpool and listening to the scouse accent and watching the news on BBC.

Bingo! Good analogy!
On my last shift, one of my patients asked, "Pardon me for asking, but are you from Singapore?" because she has a close friend who's Singaporean and she could pick out the accent. That is our unique Singaporean accent.
When I meet fellow Singaporeans here, we break out into Singlish phrases. I'm not so hoity-toity that I'm above Singlish. My main grouse is when foreigners THINK that Singlish is all we speak and then proceed to treat us with condescension like we're some under-developed country.
