spend 6 minutes of your life and watch this ...........pinoy film ......
think about that when you're staring at what you can't eat on your plate .....
http://www.cultureunplugged.com/play/1081/Chicken-a-la-Carte
fark, I feel like crying ....
Don't waste food!
even if as individuals we don't waste food, there's still sooo much out there that's being wasted. certain countries have a lot of excess food that gets thrown away just because they can't get sold.
who wants to pay for shipping etc to get them to people who need them????? oh. nobody.
as if not wasting what's on our plate will really make a difference.
making people use their land to grow *other* products that can be sold internationally instead of letting them use the land to grow food to feed themselves too is ho-hum.
the conclusion of the essay was: fuck you globalization which is really modern-day colonialization.
as meltzie was telling me .... why have so many kids when you can't afford to feed them ? .....
and notice the ironic thing ......
that the people who can afford to care for and have kids ..... often don't want to have kids .....
but the people who are least equipped to care for them ..... often breed like rabbits ....

the world's fully of irony ain't it
which reminds me of another essay.
you know all that 'preserve wildlife/wilderness/nature!!!' etc in (mainly) Asia and Africa??
guess what? People (what we call: natives) used to LIVE in those lands with the animals etc.
much of the 'protected areas' USED to be hunting grounds for the colonizers.
because the 'developed world' 'progressed/modernized/etc', they killed off a lot of whatever 'nature' there was in their land. oh please, North America used to be what before the europeans went over.....
anywhoooo, the 'natives' hardly killed large animals such as lions etc because in the first place, they didn't have much use for them. if they had weapons that could deal with them in the first(er) place.
k. so anyway, 'they' chased these 'natives' away from the land and made them live elsewhere where they had to find other ways to stay alive. what do you need to keep yourself alive in the modern world? money. how do you get that? work. how do you find that? skillz of some sort. what kind of skillz do they have? way to get easy money??? poaching?! sure, since there's a market for that!
who gets blamed? crazy barbaric natives. (oh. thank goodness we moved them out otherwise MORE animals would've been killed! pfft)
see the trend here.....??
because you expect your kids to DIE.
in singapore you have CPF(??) or whatever it is such that you don't have to rely on your children to 'keep you alive' while you're old. in canada, the government will come to your rescue etc
do they have that in other places????
their children are their lifelines.
also, do they have birth control?
how about if you fit religion into the picture here too?

I don't think their children would be their old age lifelines ... not when the poverty is in a vicious cycle ......we'd only see an ever burgeoning sea of misery .....
it's poor family planning, really (or rather, zero family planning) ....
rich people watch telly at night ..... poor people find comfort and succor in each other's bodies in their stinking, pest-infested shacks .......
and their religious piety is touching .... but so ... wrong ? .... cruelly ironic isn't it ? ....
of course, 'we' always like to see 'ourselves' as 'better' more 'civilized', whatever.
think about your grandparents' generation and your own. who had more kids. why.
we need to solve problems by figuring out what the ROOT causes of these problems are. it's easy to see what the on-the-surface issues are.
it's easy to say: let's not buy products made bby street kids.
ok. so maybe it will mean these kids no longer get to work.
but so what? will that make them go to school? i don't think so.
what will they then turn to? oh. maybe prostitution.
underground. less hard for people to find out. a fuckload shittier than when they had a factory job.
with regards to the religious piety shown in the film (though in my post, i was not referring to that), guess how they 'got' their religion.
oh. i doubt family planning is an old concept. my guess is that it's also actually a very 'western' concept.
that's on my 'to research' list after this afternoon's paper.
wait. allow me to correct myself.
our modern day idea of what family planning is is not old.
other forms of 'family planning' such as child infanticide etc was what was used before.
'our' notions of what 'family' is is not international as well.
small udon's well prepared for her exams ! .....
speaking of little girls .... did you watch that part when the little girl gleefully bites into the half chewed chicken drumstick, discarded by that teenager from that first scene ? .....
these have close to naught to do with my exams.
i can be incredibly 'nerdy' at times............muahaha.
but yes, i do believe i am well prepared for this afternoon's paper!
and yes. i may sound 'heartless' or something in my posts, but the film was sad. i guess despite it all, i do still carry romanticized notions of *a lot of things* in me.

in the end ... we can only be thankful that we all are nowhere near the bottom of the pile ....
I think it's safe to say that even the worst off in Singapore's better off than those kids there .....

how do we judge who is 'worse(or better) off'. when in shit, no matter how deep, it's still shit. if the knee-high shit is deposited from someone having bad curry induced diarrhoea, is that better than waist-high 'regular'(hehe) shit ? can 'we' as 'outsiders' see this shit?
i also find that. for things like these. for a while, people will feel shitty and sorry and bad. but they will soon forget. there's also the argument that 'why make life miserable by remembering that such things exist all the time?'. this is where 'donations' and 'volunteer work' come in. the short-term 'pleasure' we get from 'helping'.
DONT forget.

oh my .... udonie ... you sound so..... cynical ....
by cynical you mean...?
nice title for the film..

you seem to be pessimistic about everything .... even the "short term pleasure we get from helping" (SIC) .....
don't you think there can be goodness and happiness in this world ? .... even for these people ? .....
at first I thought the sight of them praying and giving thanks before tucking into offal and refuse they've dug out from the rubbish tip cruelly ironic ... it's like a bad joke that someone brainwashed them with religion ....
but then .... at least it gives them solace and succor .... and gives them the courage to face each day .... whether their god is listening or not, it really doesn't matter ....
im not saying that volunteering etc is 'bad'. i'm not saying that they're 'useless'.i've done my fair share.
and
of course there can be 'goodness' and 'happiness'! (but that would mean
different things to different people) did you not see the look on the
children's faces when the man rode in? what woudl that be?
[in a (twisted) way, not
finishing the food is 'goodness' too. it fed the 'poor'.]
and i've never said their being religious was a 'bad' thing. in fact, i once told a friend who was one of those 'evangelical christians' to do her evangelizing to those who 'need' it for i can be 'saved' later.
there's just 'other' ways of looking at things. be it what people want to consider better/worse/stupid/ridiculous/too pessimistic/too optimistic/impossible/'good'/'bad'/etc...
hehe. so, you've 'labelled' me as cynical/pessimistic. have you been labelled?
dun waste food !
oh yah. had to add.
cynicism and pessimism has always been linked to 'unhappiness'. i am NOT 'unhappy'. neither do i think that everything is 'bad'.

no .... so what am I ? ....
