Just wondering if any of you have been to New Zealand south island during winter and if it is possible to camp out in the DOC campsites with a 3 season tent (plus foam mat, plus down sleeping bag, plus a couple of heat pads thrown in?)
never but i am going in september unless the swine flu takes NZ down also...
if you going, post pictures ok hehe
sorry.. at my age, roughing it = 3-star hotel
I'm going in June... and yes, will post pictures :)
I've most of my accommodation booked .. the Gold/Blue Chain motels
but a couple of nights, I kinda hope to camp out cos...
well... new tent and all... -shows off new tent- my MSR Mutha Hubba!!
Ooooo ... MSR makes good stuff .....
but I think the most important part of your kit would be your sleeping bag ...
last time I camped in adverse weather I nearly froze my nuts off in the tent, while one of the fellows slept OUTSIDE in his Canadian Army Surplus winter sleeping bag .......
badzmaro is studying in NZ
but if u ask for his advice... i dunno.... he is mad and contantly on weed

Problem is - its a 3 season tent.
I figure if i get a couple (or triple) of those reflective foam mats, PLUS sleeping bags.. shd be ok right...I layer like SIAO lah. PLUS the foot print - u think can insulate from ground chill or not?
how adverse is your winter?? got snow or not?
Heng the squirrels didn't keep them.

that was autumn camping up in the canadian shield country ....... I don't think anyone's mad enough to camp in deep winter over there, other than the inuits and the local army ...
in the day it was still just hoodie and pants weather, but at night I really suffered ...
but I think it should be fine lah ... I'm envious of your tent ... I can only afford MSR's stoves ...
get a balaclava though, else your face'd get frozen ....
We got it cheap ~ stock clearance at camper's corner.
Then we realised that batch the flysheet all got problem - the coating became sticky.
So went back to camper's corner, apparently all those who got it during that time kenna so they send everything back, and MSR gave us new flysheet.
So.. well... Anyway now Camper's Corner stock only Black Diamond I think - and their own brand.
june is the beginning of winter, so it isn't that cold yet ..
i haven't tried to camp out b4 in winter, so ain't that sure whether u will be able to tahan the cold or not with your protective layers ... hehe ..
