Singapore: Tiger Airways set the pace for companies and residents to come forward to do their bit for survivors of tropical storm Ketsana in the Philippines, making a donation of 500,000 pesos.
Tiger Aviation boss Tony Davis and Tiger Airways Singapore Managing Director Rosalynn Tay presented the cheque of about S$15,000 to Philippines Ambassador to Singapore.
Ambassador Minda C Cruz said, "We are saddened by this unfortunate natural disaster but heartened by the kind gestures shown by Singaporeans to help Filipinos to rebuild their lives after the storm.
"Tiger Airways is among the first to answer our call for help and this generous donation of 500,000 pesos, the largest thus far collected by the embassy, will be given directly to those who need it most."
The Philippines was one of the first destinations served by Tiger Airways and Tony Davis, President & Group Chief Executive said everyone at the airline was moved by the suffering in the Philippines.
“I urge Singapore companies and residents to chip in and do their part" said Davis.
Only monetary donations can be made towards the relief effort as used clothing, is prohibited from being imported into the country.
However the Filipino Association in Singapore (FAS) is accepting donations in kind which may be dropped off at A—Freight Cargo in Orchard Road’s Lucky Plaza.
Two other firms in Lucky Plaza, i—Remit Singapore and LBC Singapore have also decided to help by waiving remittance charges for donations made to organisations in the Philippines such as the Philippine National Red Cross, ABS—CBN Foundation, GMA Foundation, Philippine National Red Cross, and the National Disaster Coordinating Center.
Singapore—based relief organisations, Mercy Relief and Singapore Red Cross are also sending aid in the form of food, medicine and water purification tablets and filters, along with cash and cheque donations.
