Okay, he didn't meet his O Level goals, but in the end, he did manage to get into a JC, and he has already spent eight months in JC. So what is the problem, really?
If he was saying that he got kicked out of JC because of poor O Level results, I can understand..... but this?
A lot has to do with parents, and their "expectations".
If anything, their "good intent" kills off the kid's brain cells most of the time.
I had to teach sec 3 physics to such a kid before and its simply stressful and unfulfilling.
I was so happy that I got fired through no fault of mine. Can you imagine trying to teach a kid who's less interested to learn than the parent?
We've seen Raffles kids cry in past years because they didn't get a perfect streak of A1s. And it doesn't help if you hang around people who rub that into you.

Oh yeah.... that. Everyone else was shaking their heads at this so-called 'Raffles spirit' of getting straight As.
'Raffles spirit' my arse. Sir Raffles himself is probably rolling in his grave right now.
If they truly believe that one's worth is solely determined by the number of As he gets, then honestly, they all need lobotomies.

I would understand if it happens at the A-Levels, because one less S-paper distinction could be the difference between getting that scholarship-cum-high flying career and having an "ordinary" life like everyone else.
Wait, maybe that's how we ended up with such gabrament agencies in the first place...
Anyway, I can't understand if they cry about the O-Levels... unless someone fools them into thinking that it counts for much. They just get you into a more established JC, and the rest is up to you.

i maintain that we should never mistake education for intelligence

They also need to be taught this:
Don't sweat the small stuff. And it's all small stuff.
And things like detention and poor common test results are not grounds for suicide.

When you've been a good student all the long, sometimes it can be hard to swallow. I never had such a hard time with my studies until I tried F Maths... I kept failing or barely passing it for one-and-a-half years until it was apparent that it wasn't worth compromising my other results for.
