It literally took me weeks to come up with a solution to a problem I was facing in my experiments.....
And the solution turned out to be so ridiculously simple and cheap....

Well, I guess it's true that when you're used to dealing with complicated problems, the simplest solutions can be hard to get.
I kind of remember reading about how Einstein had problems dealing with simple arithmetic while dealing with the problems of general relativity.

The Russians eventually adopted the space pen though. And the Americans also started out with pencils, but found them flammable and hazardous. (Snopes)

When I first read your problem, I actually thought of those expensive 'space-saving bags' that require you to stick the nozzle of a vacuum cleaner into the bag. But then, what are the odds that your hotel room would have a vacuum cleaner?
Then I suddenly remembered the ridiculously-simple Army solution.
me not there yet.. leaving in about 4 hours time... .
It's like Isaac Asimov answering that alpha centauri is the nearest star to the earth.. and forgets abt the sun.
/me munch on seafood salad with japanese sesame dressing now...
