indonesia has everything malaysia has ... and the soil is 10 times richer cos of the volcanoes .... in indonesia, many of the coal veins are so shallow they just need a battalion of coolies with changkols to mine them .....
Wat we've is only human's wisdom
sad
Some economists and sociologists have been ruminating over this issue: about how an abudance of natural wealth can be a liability, and a lack of it can in fact be an asset.
It is sobering when you think of Ghana as compared to South Korea. At the point of its independence in the late 1950s, Ghana was ahead of South Korea in terms of GDP. It has abundant natural resources in terms of cash crops, whereas South Korea was still recovering from the Korean War.
Now, South Korea has Samsung and Kia and whatnot.... and Ghana has regressed after a series of failed projects.
A lack of resources, on the other hand, forces the populace to be creative with what they have. Which is at least part of the reason why South Korea and Taiwan both surged ahead after the Korean War and Chinese Civil War respectively.

we should be proud ... but not cocky .... we've got to realise that whatever we've achieved can really be gone in a generation, because our wealth has no real foundation, we've no natural resources, and really, if you believe in the equality of human beings, then our population is not any smarter than others, but the only difference, is really, education, right ? .... whatever we can provide for other people, others can as well.
looking at the lazy, undriven young workers fatumnette has under her, who saunter in at 9, hates OT, doesn't check their work, falls sick at least once a month ... and the over pampered, insolent young kids nowadays, I'm frightened ... we've become effette ....an aircon nation ... we bitch about how stressful our life is, our education system, while within 7 hour's flight radius from singapore, there are 1 billion other people hungry for the opportunities that we have, because they'd rather have this sort of stress, than to live in an attap hut with a mud floor living on rice and salted fish ... fatumnette's indonesian brother in-law, was telling us last weekend that one of their new maids came from one of those fly-blown remote indonesian islands so poor that they were eating the bark of certain trees for food (one of those arid islands near papua I think, judging from the features)... and she ate meat only a few times a year before coming into their employ ...
I'm reminded of this chinese saying ... "fu bu guo san dai" ... wealth doesn't last beyond three generations ....will the next generation be up to the task of keeping us as prosperous as we are now ? I'm not sure ...

ppl has gone soft.

I think come to think of it, I've realised e meaning of education has also been lost.
It's not too late to alter it.
later lunch today, let's hope the end ends earlier for me
to think of it, e mindset of thinking for everyone is like no longer there.
When we think for others when we're doing something new, it may allow u to get things done easier and faster.

I've always favoured late lunches...that way, the end comes closer during the break.

Countries that rely on primary products tend not to prosper as much because the products are usually primary (no value-addedness) and because primary product prices are volatile.
Hence the importance of industrialisation and education if the country is to grow its economy quickly.

natural resources and primary industries gives you a foundation for wealth that'll never go away unlike human capital .....
people would still need fuel, minerals and food, even if they have google or facebook ....
and it gives you a good starting point and makes it much easier to move up the value chain ....

Yup.
It all depends on what you do with the foundations.
But it is intriguing to see that staying on these foundations typically doesnt get you far.
But undoubtedly if I could grow my rice, I would.
