most of the fishes they release end up on the dinner table anyways ....
people know where the fishes from vesak day and taoist temple celebrations are released ... they just park themselves nearby and help themselves with rod, net or trap. You'll see hordes of ah laus, foreign workers, kayak anglers etc, around such areas for weeks afterwards . The fishes usually do not stray far.
I've seen fellows returning with 40 snappers culled from such releases.

Not everyone does that
Some release terrapins, others release baby asian catfish which really damage the environment
Seriously release of animals should not be allowed even for religious purposes

Not necessary
Just look at the Terrapin and Peacock Bass released into the wild
this is what stupid 放生 with no thought for anything causes
Originally posted by sbst275:Terrapin are aggressive in nature. They’re hardy also
Ya la and those morons will always choose a hardier species to release coz no pt release and they die -_-"

a bunch of us had a meeting with a PUB biologist the other day, he told us that those red eared sliders have reached plague proportions at some public waterways ....
he also tell us of arapaimas getting caught deep inside the catchment area ....

why are there no bans on the blasted thing and why are there no campaigns on these things since the bloody MIW have a hard-on for campaigns?

well, actually, the bunch of us were campaigning for more reservoirs to be made available to the public for fishing and other recreational use.
what we understand is that policing the reservoirs round the clock is practically impossible, given the resources. Further more, a lot of these fishes are dumped into the storm drains or drainage rivers and swam up to the main bodies of water by themselves ...
There is nothing you can do, the blame falls on those irresponsible pet owners. Some of these are real idiots indeed. Once i saw a big fat goldfish that was dumped in what was really a big puddle of rain water beside a biking trail at bukit timah nature reserve.

Arapaimas have been around for YEARS
So is the Redtail Catfish and Shovelnose catfish and other monster fishes. There are Alligator Gars too
Which is WHY I have been saying that the turtle AVA should Ban for sale is really the red eared sliders and not other more docile species that do not get that large and make better pets like Musk Turtles & Maps. Also they will cost more and it is a deterent for idiots who buy pets on impulse!!!
They should also consider reptile license and allow pets like farm bred tortoises like Red Foots & Cherry head tortoises as they are suitable for our humid climate and make very clean and intelligent pets -_-"
Seriously if they want to ensure that people don't dump these pets, make it illegal to sell except for people with the correct license, micro-chip these pets so that idiots who are not interested won't buy. Plus, not many ppl will want to spend about $100 for a turtle/tortoise unless they really like them.
Oh also for monster fish, it's ok to buy them as long as they can show AVA they can house them for life.
Make it like the Australian Lungfish where you can purchase as long as you show the AVA officers that you have adequate housing for it for life (seeing that it will likely outlive you haha)
Phew... managed to get access to a PC for a while.
Anyway, while I was gone, something 'happening' apparently came up.
I swear, if this bugger was standing right in front of me, he'd get 1x buttstroke to the head from my SAR 21.
