Will imtimacy cost a friendship to perish?

I was thinking if assuming you end up in bed with a very close friend.
What will happen?
1) You guys will avoid one another hence drift apart.
2) The relaitonship will no longer be purely friendship, If it happen once it will happen again
3) Eventually get together as a couple.
Is it possible to remain purely as friends?
Or you have just lose a close friend due to your impertinent actions.
Anyone had experience or seen it happen? -

Some ppl can bed occasionally and still remain really good friends (Friends with Benefit). But some just can't do it, for fear of losing the friendship.

If accidents happen, the first reaction would likely be "oh crap! what have i done!"
It would take a long conversation to get to the next stage, which ideally, should be the 2 get together and try to make it work as a couple, but it can also turn out that it gets so awkward that the 2 of u just forget about it and avoid each other...
As for "friends with benefits", it depends on whether she's that open minded or not... If she is, then good sex is safe sex -
