Technically, the crime happened in the stretch of land that belongs to Malaysia.

The news didnt say anything about the train sounded the horn LOTS OF TIMES however it was told that "It is believed that the train driver had signalled to both of them to move away from the track"
And no part of the news says the train did try to slow down.
From the New Paper: Linkie
WHAT began as an uneventful and sleepy start to the day turned into a traumatic experience for a train driver.
Guiding his empty train from Singapore to Johor Baru where it was to begin its service yesterday morning, he saw to his horror two teenagers sitting on the railway track in front of him.
He immediately blew his whistle to alert them and get them to move away.
When Mr Goh Sheng Yao, 19, and Miss Clara Lee Jing Yu, 20, failed to heed the train driver's warning, he applied the brakes - to no avail.
This is because a moving train takes about 400m before it can come to a full halt. .
So the driver had to watch helplessly and in horror as the train mowed down the couple in front of him.
There you go. The driver sounded his whistle, and then applied the brakes ASAP. Sounds like reasonable procedure to me. Do you know Newton's 1st Law and what it says about inertia? You know how much inertia a moving train has and its minimum stopping distance to prevent derailment? Do you know Newton's 2nd Law and what it says about the train's momentum and resultant force applied on the couple on the tracks?
But never mind the train. The truth is that they just have no business sitting on the tracks of an active railway line. Do you know that KTM train toilets empty out onto the track? That is to say, after you do your business in the toilet bowl and you flush, it all goes down onto the tracks?
Combine that with all the dust, smoke, diesel fumes, darkness at 5.24 am, and the very real threat of getting langgar-ed by a high-momentum, high-inertia train.... what business do they have sitting on the tracks?!?!
actually it's trespassing, tat land does not belong to us
(Unless KTM sv is no longer in service)
that land belongs to KTM, which is a Malaysian registered company, not Malaysia

I pity the driver.

If I am not wrong that land legally belongs to the State of Johor.

err, where it says?
In the first place, they aren't supposed to sit at the railway. Knowing trains can come at anytime of the day.
If there are still trains running on the line, the line and land still belongs to them. An example is the former Jurong Branch Line. That land isnt used anymore, and Singapore took the land back from Malaysia.
I believe that when you step into the platform, your passport is chopped liao? If so, then you are already in malaysia...

Yes..
If I recalled correctly, they won't stamp on your passport. They will stamp onto your declaration card. Just a chop like, KTM TG PAGAR 10 AUG 2009
Then when you are returning back to Singapore via train.. They will take away your declaration card, and will sign, in red ink, with the officer's Signature, and the date you depart from Johor... Something like, Ahmad 11/8/09
nope to M'sia from Tg Pagar they can't stamp e passport cos you've not cleared Woodlands CIQ
only tat special KTM stamp
An accident involving the couple now becomes very off topic, now talking abt KTM system
Afterall, we stillcome back to the topic.

yeah right, haha
as i recall from the debate during the 90s, singapore's contention were that the land belongs to KTM and not Malaysia
the Malaysia immigration does not stamp on our passport at Tanjong Pagar or anywhere while the train is in Singapore
but i'll leave this debate for another topic

Ok it is like Orchard MRT station belong to SMRT but not SIngapore>Hahaha
There is still a lot of land around Singapore that belongs to the State of Johor which they refused to sell and Singapore cant do nothing about it.I cant quite recall the many times when I took the train from Tanjong Pagar to Holiday Inn (JB) in the 80s or where my passport was actually stamped but I do recall one incident when a Singaporean friend jumped off a railing to pick up a cigarette box that he dropped and then climbed back.....before we could board the train a group of Singapore Police almost arrested him for illegal re-entry into Singapore>LOL...this is so hilarious so how could I forget?
moral is:
the line is still active. don't play near the railway line.

That is rite! when someone dies on the MRT lines most would believe it has to be suicide but when people die on the KTM lines. Cold blooded murder izzit? Train driver's licence need to be gantung to make some forumnites happy here>Hahaha

via a corporation and not directly, so this is not a sovereignty issue, arbor we can say ports in Dubai or India belonging to PSA Intl is actually Singapore land
i believe the error was corrected, hence you wont see Malaysia Immigration stamping passports until we are well out of Singapore
phew
If you want to know how fast the trains is,
view this few vids:

The driver of the train, sure want to avoid the accident. But since the two student didnt manage to budge, the driver DID apply his brakes but he watch helplessly to see the students being bumped by the train.

Let us not even talk about train for a while.Would any reasonable person sit in the middle of a road even if there were no cars passing at that time?
Guys, past have been past already, so let the matter rest. If this going to continue on arguing, i think the 2 victims won't have peace? Just my 2 cents
Then can I ask, Causeway belongs to who leh?
the cause of their death = complete mystery
1) cannot be drunk cos' blood tests show no traces of alchohol or anything
2) cannot be stuck in trackscos' from the photos, even if stuck in track, very easy to remove and considering the noise from train so loud, they could have heard it from far away and plenty of time to remove leg / shirt / pants / shoes / whatever. And btw, the dimensions of the gap is not enough to trap a leg or anything.
3) cannot be unaware of train coming due to loud noise of train in the middle of the night
4) RAILWAY TRACK GOT GHOST???!!
and yeah, i agree driver not at fault cos' it's just IMPOSSIBLE to brake the trains in such a short time and plus, it's night. The driver very likely didn't see those guys until some distance away and by then, too late liao.
this is what happens to kids who don't want to go home and still want to stay out late.
see lah, got problem liao. 2 young lives 20 and 19 yrs old........big big pity.
my condolences to them.
