The Bay of Fundy in Nova Scotia on the east coast of Canada has historically claimed the world's greatest range of tides. Tidal changes in water level up to 56 feet (17 m) have been observed. The scooped shape of the bottom of the Bay of Fundy tends to funnels tidal currents, enabling the tidal range increase toward the head of the Bay. At Cape Chignecto, the flow is split between Chignecto Bay and the Minas Basin. Partially due to the Coriolis effect (which is responsible for the counterclockwise circulation of hurricanes and other storm systems), the stronger flow curves right into the Minas Basin. The 13-hour natural resonant frequency of water in the bay also augments the tidal range.
Recent measurements at Leaf Basin along the southwestern part of Ungava Bay, in far northern Quebec, now rival Fundy for the world record. Although the Ungava tides are consistently higher than the Fundy tides, the highest single measurement remains in the Fundy-Minas Basin. Other locations with exceptional tidal include the Bristol Channel in the west of England, Anchorage, Alaska, southern Argentina and northwestern Australia.
These two photographs were taken on the pier in Parrsboro Nova Scotia in August of 1995. Parrsboro is the largest port on the Minas Basin. Notice the boy diving into the water at high tide. Other people can be seen in the distance in both images. Click on the image to see an enlarged view.

i wonder how they tie up the boat? It has to be long enough to let the boat move all the way down. Skali he forgot and tie the rope too tight, the boat will be dangling

Juneau Icefield is located to the east of the capital of Alaska, Juneau. This summer, my wife and I had the opportunity to rent a float-plane to fly us over this immense region of glacial ice. The Juneau Icefield is the fifth largest such area on the North American continent (approximately 2400 square kilometers) and estimated depths 75 to 720 meters. This photo shows many features common to glacial areas such as: arête, nunataks, cirques, medial and lateral moraines, crevasses, and arcuate structures responding to the geology below the ice (see links below for more details. The image above shows just a portion of one of the 38 glaciers that feeds the huge Icefield. Later in the visit to Juneau, we visited Mendenhall Glacier, which exits the IceField north of Juneau and is an excellent example of a retreating glacier (estimated about 40m/year).

The photo above shows Little River Falls, which is part of a 1,400 acre park known as the Little River Canyon National Preserve. From its start in northwestern Georgia, the Little River continues along Lookout Mountain in northeastern Alabama carving out a spectacular canyon. The Falls itself is approximately 100 feet (30 m) wide and drops 40 feet (12 m). Little River drains an area of approximately 200 square miles (130,000 acres) before emptying into Weiss Lake. The plateau-like surface of Lookout Mountain, which forms the eastern boundary of the Cumberland Plateau, results from an erosion-resistant layer of sandstone atop the mountain. Streams, such as Little River, cut vertically into joints that characterise this resistant rock formation. This view of Little River Falls is close to the beginning of a scenic drive along the rim of Little River Canyon. The picture was taken on November 13, 2005, at time when this area had received little rainfall, thus providing an opportunity to explore the river bed above the falls.

This photograph was taken in mid-summer, at mid-day, in one of the deeper slot canyons of northern Arizona, Antelope Canyon. As sandstone formations on the Colorado Plateau are carved by fast moving streams, narrow and deep slot canyons sometimes result. The light which enters this canyon is reflected off the narrow sandstone walls and may range in color from golden yellow to purple, depending upon the illumination angle, the type of rock and the light intensity.

This photo showing a scenic walled walkway was was taken in Saumane (Vaucluse), France on November 6, 2005. The walls are composed of a type of sandstone, which in France is referred to as "mollasse." It's actually a soft sandstone formed during the Tertiary Period (about 65 to 1.8 million years ago). These highly stratified formations are evidently unique to Europe and reveal the ebb and flow of ancient tides.

Above southern Ontario on October 17, 2005, I was treated to a superb view of a condensation trail (contrail) and its shadow. It was just before local sunset (within an hour), so the angle of the Sun was nice and low, and the high cirrus clouds made a perfect projection screen for the “shadow” of the cloud-like contrail of a jet aircraft. What's interesting about this shadow is that you can see that's not a simple break in the clouds because the shape of the contrail matches very closely with that of the shadow. Note the odd bulges and irregularities of their outlines. In this instance, the shadow was about 2 ½ times the length of the contrail. When the angle of the Sun is too low the shadow gets stretched out and it becomes difficult to discern the shape of the matching contrail. This particular shadow lasted for almost 20 minutes.

Just after classes this past November at the Catholic University in Cordoba, Argentina, students asked me to explain the strange sky shown above. The breathtaking rays were coming from the east, while the Sun was setting in the west (see inset). However, the actual form of these rays was determined by clouds in the vicinity of the Sun. Hence, these are anticrepuscular rays. When conditions are just right, twilight rays from the setting Sun stretch across the sky and converge on the eastern horizon. The fact that the rays appear to converge toward the horizon is due to the observers perspective -- they're actually parallel to one another. At left is the Electronics Engineering building, and at right is the Systems Engineering building on the campus of the Catholic University.

The photo above showing tufa formations which grace the shores of Mono Lake, California was taken in the early evening of December 3, 2005. Tufa are limestone columns formed by underwater springs rich in calcium that mix with the lake water that's rich in carbonates. Tufa towers grow underwater, some to heights reaching over 30 feet (9 m). Beginning in 1941, diversions of stream water high in the Sierra's, for use primarily in Southern California, has caused the lake water level to fall, exposing the tufa. Recent legislation will allow more stream water to flow into the lake, filling it to levels approaching those of the past.
Also shown on the photo is the rising shadow of the Earth, rapidly approaching from the east -- the pinkish layer atop the shadow is known as the Belt of Venus.
