Ina polymerization reaction, about 10cm3 of styrene and kerosene are mixed and refluxed for 45 - 60 minutes. The temperature will be about 150 deg cel. After cooling the reaction mixture is poured into about 5 times its own volume of methanol. A waxy white solid was formed under surface of the methanol.
What is the function of kerosene in the experiment?
To hasten the reflux process since kerosene is flammable?
Just want to know if I'm right in saying this. Correct me if necessary.
to make polystyrene, kerosene is part of the reactants.
