Anyone thinking of applying to US universities or colleges?
The process can seem quite complicated at first, but it is worth it. Many schools have really good financial aid packages for international students. So the dream of studying overseas without a bond is actually something that can be achieved.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask them here. I'm currently studying in the US so I can help out with some tips on the application process.
There are pro and con in studying in US university if you would asked in an Singaporean point of view :
1) There is no ranking label like "first-class","second-class" honour for US bachelor, however your GPA grade must be 4.5 and above then you can graduate.
2) United States remains the finest education destination for higher education, this is not diffcult to see from World Universities ranking.
3) Usually almost all their degree is Multi-disciplinary, this mean that if you choose business, you will not study only business but humanities and science etc so that you are expose to different area.
But the con might be the reason why Singaporean would choose to go to UK or Australia to study instead :
1) Even if you are an Polytechnic diploma holder, there is no advanced standing to any US universities.Only some modules are exempted. In fact you still need to take an Associates degree which is just like half of a bachelor's degree, or (often) the first two years of study in a four year (standard US) bachelor's degree.Only UK and Australia Universities provide this opportunity.
2) The currency pair between USA and Singapore is not an advantage to study, although UK is even worse.Imagine you spend S$7 to eat an Macdonald in US compared to S$5 meal in Singapore. Not to forget to mention local Americans ' degree cost is usually low compared to the similar degree for International student.
3) Singapore has many better finanical aid for local U, in fact if you intend to study for PH.D, there is an NGS Scholarship where there is monthly stipend of S$3,200 up to 4 years and even payment of full tuition fees up to 4 years of PhD.I don't think US would so nice to provide that.(correct me if I am wrong)
