crude oil ----(stage 1 )-----> heavy oil------(stage 2)----> monomer M ----stage 3--> polypropene tray
a. 2 processes are involved in the production of the monomer M form heavy oil. what are they?
I know 1 of them is cracking but what about the other? M is propene.
b. by means of full structural formulae, write an equation to show how polypropene is formed from monomer M.
I know you have to draw propene, but how many? Do i just draw the repeating unit?
c. what is the maximum mass of polypropene that can be made from 30 tonnes of propene?
Thanks.
stage 3 - addition polymerisation
stage 1 - i supposed it's fractional distillation if i understand the question correctly.

Eh, for (a), the questionis referring to stage 2. because it states "in the production of the monomer M from heavy oil".
Thanks !

Stage 2 should be cracking followed by maybe fractional distillation to seperate the 2 compounds formed during the cracking process.
b) For polypropene, its juz [C3H6]n.
If u draw it out, its something like [ C - C ]n Please fill in the H urself. All polymer are written as 2 C with branches. |
C
c) Hmm i think u should get back 30 tonnes of PP since additional polymerisation doesn't have any additional component in the reaction equation.
