EIGHTEEN Singaporean students from various secondary schools and tertiary institutions clinched medals in the International Olympiads for Science and Mathematics 2009.
The competitions include the Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics Olympiads, held in Japan, United Kingdom, Mexico and Germany respectively.
Students competed against the brightest in the world in a series of intellectually stimulating challenges and rigorous tests of their theoretical knowledge and mastery of scientific and mathematical concepts.
The Ministry of Education said on Friday it was heartened to note that Singapore has been ranked among the top 10 in the world for most of the categories in the competition.
In the International Biology Olympiad, Singapore was placed 3rd out of 56 countries, behind China and the US, which won four gold medals each. Last year, Singapore was in fifth place.
In the Physic Olympiad, Singapore came in 8th out of 71 countries - from 11th place last year. It also climbed up to 5th place out of 66 countries in the Chemistry Olympiad - from 12th spot.
