Mr Tan sold golf balls in packs of five. The original selling price of each pack of golf balls was $20. He sold 60% of his golf balls at $20 per pack and the rest at a discount of 30%. He collected $1056 from the sale of all the golf balls. How many golf balls did he sell altogether?

price of 40% of balls of discounted price = 20x 0.7 = X
1056- X= Y
Y/ 20 = Z ( NUM OF PACKS)
Z X 5 =A ( 60% OF TOTAL NUM OF BALLS)
60%= A
100% = A/60 x 100
= ANS

You seems to make the math problem even more complicated.
Can i have a more simple explanation. Thanks.

Yi Hao, it is great that you want to help, but please do remember to simplfy solutions for P6 and below questions.
Price of a pack of Golf Ball with 30% Discount
= 70% X $20
= $14
Ratio of Golf Balls sold at original price to ratio of Golf Balls sold at discount price
= 6 : 4 = 3 : 2
Let 3 packs of golf balls sold at original price and 2 packs of golf balls sold at discount price be considered a set.
Cost of one set of Golf Balls
= Cost of 3 packs of original-priced Golf Balls + Cost of 2 packs of discounted-priced Golf Balls
= ( 3 X $20 ) + ( 2 X $14 )
= $60 + $28
= $88
Amount of sets of Golf Balls sold
= Total earnings / Cost of one set of Golf Balls
= $1056 / $88
= 12 sets
Amount of golf balls in one set
= Amount of packs in one set X Amount of golf balls in one pack
= 5 X 5
= 25 golf balls
Total amount of golf balls sold
= Total amount of sets X Total amount of golf ball in one set
= 12 X 25
= 300 golf balls
Thank you Forbiddensinner for your explanation.
but thats what i was taught in p6 !

P6 generally don't use algebra much.

the w,x,y,z just signals an ANSWER.
they dun mean anything else !
let total number of packet = 10 units.
60% of total unit = 6 unit. 40% of total unit = 4 unit.
30% discount = $20 x 0.7 = $14
6 unit x $20 + 4 unit x $14 = $1056
thus 1 unit has 6 packets.
6 x 5 balls = 30 balls. so each unit has 30 balls.
therefore, total balls sold = 30 balls x 10 = 300 balls.

In P6, only four operations of Algebra is taught.
