Hi,
Im not sure when to use the naming for Benzyl or Phenyl to represent the benzene ring side branch.
eg...
why is it that
H H

C = C

H (O)*
where(O)* represents the benzene ring...
This molecule is named as Benzyl ethene
However...
is it also alright for it to be named Phenyl ethene???
Whereas,, eg...
Br F

H- C - C - H

Br (O) --benzene ring
1,1-dibromo- 2-fluoro-2-phenyl-ethane.
Why cant it be possible for the "phenyl" to be replaced with a benzyl instead?? Since they both reprensent the same benzene ring??
Thanks ! :D

Where did u get the name Benzyl ethene from?
I think its either benzyl ethene or
its ethylene benzyl.
Its just the systematic name for Styrene.

Checking up on styrene MSDS, the closest i seen is phenyl ethylene or what u all call phenyl ethene and not benzyl.
Post your source? I think its wrong which is why i edited my post and remove the explaination for what is benzyl n phenyl since your source seems to be wrong.
For the record :
"Phenyl" refers to the benzene ring alone. Eg. phenyl chloride = chlorobenzene.
"Benzyl" refers to the benzene ring with an additional CH2 group. Eg. benzyl chloride = chloromethylbenzene.
Edit : ok, I see SBS2601D aleady posted a link which basically says what I just said.
