There was question which says "Plant moves by itself", and I selected true for it and got it wrong, may I know why?
Reasoning: Based on the Science PSLE Revision Guide/P3 My Pals are Here! Science textbook, it says that:
"All living things move by themeselves" which means, plants, which are living things, should be able to move by themselves.
My teacher's reasoning: That is a P3 textbook, it has been made to be simple, so they just used the word "move", but now that it is P5, it is changed. That means I followed the textbook and got it wrong!
Doesn't it mean that textbooks are useless? Why bother to refer to them?
Common sense.... :/
Plants indeed are living things, but they are stationary objects(literally).
Oh and textbooks are not useless, if it was, it'll be removed alr.
Hi,
It is important to investigate, in addition to following what books say. Thanks!
Cheers,
Wen Shih
First, you need to understand that move relates to mobility which means of an particular object been capable of point to point action unaided. This means that all animals can move as they have moving-aiding cell such as muscles. However, plants can only move certain parts of their body, so for plant movement, it should be movement to aid in photosynthesize and other life process and the moving is very gradual and some movement in plants are still debatable by Biologists such as translocation. So for plants, they do not move but can lean toward one side and could grow. In this context, growing is not equal to mobility. Therefore, that statement technically is true in some sense but in your context, false.
plants do move, albeit very slowly...common knowledge that plants will gravitate towards sunlight....it's not just growth, it's actual movement.....regardless, you'll need to have this clarified...

Hi
I believe this is a MCQ question.Could we have the complete question so as to be in a better position to pass comment?
Plant moves in response to sunlight/light.What are the other available options in the question?
No. Plants dont move by themselves. We humans move the plants!

Give us the full question and all the options given.
You might be able to "fight" for a mark with your teacher.
OMG! i am sec 4 this yr and i do not really know this answer after looking ur replies...
but i think that plants move,
there is always this experiment about putting a plant in a black box and open a hole... then next few day the plant will point towards the hole... no one moved that plant right? and it moved itself... then we are always asked what did you observed? then my answer would be the plant point/move/tilt towards the hole.. then i got a correct...
next thing is that there is this plant u would almost see it near restaurants or rich apartments, i dunno wat the plant name is but this plant likes to stick to the wall and "climb" up, if not u put and stick near it the plant will "climb" up the stick... so the plant moved by itself, right?
so i still think that plant DO move by itself..

hm. could be that your teacher was wrong too. heard of carnivorous plants? They bite=move. tell that to your teacher and claim your marks.
I remembered that i had a plant(grew two storeys high) and could actually "sleep"(by closing their leaves).
So conclusion: A plant can move. You ask your teacher. If your CA2 paper come out and give you a cross, tell ur teacher to come to this site.
TS seem to post and run....sigh
