There are some p6 maths qns that I encountered in my students' work that her other tutor solved using algebra, and I would solve them using algebra too. However, she has difficulty understanding as the p6 syllabus about algebra is is very basic. Therefore, I hope to see if there are any other ways to solve the qns apart from algebra.
1) An art exhibition was held for two days. On the first day, 500 more men than women attended the exhibition. On the second day, the number of men decreased by 10%, and the number of women increase by 15%. The total number of visitors on the second day is 1680. How many females attended the exhibition on the second day?
2) At 7am, Car A left Town X for Town Y. At the same time, Car B left Town Y for Town X. At 3pm, the two cars met. 5 hours later, Car A arrived at Town Y, while Car B was 150km away from Town X. What is the distance between Town X and Town Y?
3) Alan and Barry have 480 marbles. Alan gave 2/5 of his marbles to Barry. Barry then gave 3/7 of the total number of marbles that he has to Alan. In the end, both Alan and Barry had the number of marbles. How many marbles did Alan have at first?
Thank you! (:

First Day
Man l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l____500____l
Woman l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l
Second Day
Man l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l___450___l
Woman l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l
Total = 1680 = 450 + 41 units, thus 1 unit = 30
Woman on 2nd day = 23 units = 23 X 30 = 690 women
2.
Note: Not drawn to scale for the following models
Car A l__l__l__l__l__l__l__l__l__l__l__l__l__l
Car B l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_____150_____l
This two diagrams shows the total distance between the two towns, with each unit representing the speed of the respective car.
Look at the following model.
It is the same as the two above, and also represents the total distance between the two town.
Car A and B l__l__l__l__l__l__l__l__l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l_l
Comparing the model of "Car A" along with this model, you will have 5 big units ( Speed of Car A ) = 8 small units ( Speed of Car B)
We can now change the big units in the "Car A model" into small units, and then compare it with the "Car B model" ( Since both of them are equal as they represent the distance between the two towns ) to find the answer.
I am too lazy to calculate the answer, and since you said that you have the solution already, I will leave it to you.
3.
Amount of marbles each boy have at the end = 240
Amount of marbles Barry have before giving some to Alan
= (240/4) X 7 =420
Hence Alan has 60 marbles then
Amount of marbles Alan has at first before giving some to Barry
= (60/3) X 5 = 100 marbles
icic. Thanks!
