(a)
5cm - 4.5 cm = 0.5cm
4.5 cm - 0.5cm = 4cm
(b) use same logic as in (a)

By comparing the flower pots on the left to those on the right, you will realise that 2 flower pots = 22cm.
Hence, 1 flower pot is 11cm.
hmm. but if u remove 3 stacked pots from the picture on the left, u will have the inverted pot + 1 additional stacked part left. which means 1 pot + 1 stacked part = 42-22 = 20cm.
so if u compare that the the figure on the right (with 1 pot + 2 stacked parts), 1 stacked part will be = 22-20 = 2cm
so deducting that from the remaining figure on the left (inverted pot + 1 stacked part), you will get 20-2 = 18cm.
dunno if u understand what i mean. but if i try working backwards, i think 18 should be correct.=x

Yes I do understand.
However, the most important question now is whether we are suppose to infer directly from the illustration or not. If the illustration is to be trusted, then the stacked pots on the left are of different length from those stacked on the right, and thus the only logical way is to directly compare the difference in length via the illustration.
If the illustration is not drawn to scale though, then your answer will be correct.
icic. i get where u are coming from. but since the pots are identical, i think we should be able to safely compare that way rather than from the figure directly. most of them aint drawn to scale i guess.
