Hey guys/gals.
I've been very worried about SBQ section of the papers
Would it be alright if anyone is willing to draft out the standard structure of the answer?
Eg, Source A and B is difference is saying (issue). In source A, (quote). this tells us that the source is implying that (explain). however in source B, (quote), tellling us that (explain)..................
I really need help for these standard questions, eg message, purpose, usefulness, reliability.
Help please!
Inference
#1 Infer in your own words
#2 evidence from source to support your inference and explain if needed
#3 2nd inference same as above
#4 2nd evidence same as above
Statement Evidence Explanation
#5 question the purpose of source
Purpose remeber Message, Audience, Desired Outcome, Action Word
Avoid using contextual knowledge for this kind of question
Eg. I can infer from the source that ABC company is earning a lot of money because of blah blah blah. The source shows this to attract investors to invest blah blah blah.
Compare and Contrast
#1 Highlight key instruction word
#2 Interpret source
#3 identify common denominator (ie smell vs smell, taste vs taste)
#4 Evidence from both source
By increasing level Provenance Topic Content Tone Purpose
Avoid explaining whole source and must remember to have common denominator for comparison every time.
PS: you can directly skip the level of provenance if you want to
Eg. Source A and Source B both states that ABC is earning lots of money. *give evidence* and explain the rational behind the source with Message, Audience, Desired Outcome, Action Word
My the other 2 parts are lousy like so i not giving them~
I see. So for the purpose part it would be like
"The source is trying to (convince) the (singaporeans) that the govt is trying their best to solve the current situation so that (they will continue to support the govt). something like that?
Can anyone tell me, is SBQ or Structured essay question harder ?

something like that..
note that the
message in your text above is solving current situation,
audience singaporean (oh ya i forgot say, dun just put vaguely people, put something with certainity like the olden day Venetians, singaporeans etc on what context is saying about)
desired outcome is garner support
action word is support

personally i feel that it is SBQ, SEQ is more of memorising
I feel that its SBQ too. SEQ, just practice again and again, and just manouevre the points. and usefulness? anyone knows? Thanks VietyKU990

SEQ is for those who study very hard, and of cuz required a tiny bit of thinking.
SBQ is for those who seldom study.. but very good at thinking and interpreting...
for me i think SBQ dam easy... always the SEQ pull me down lol!
ok i think o lvl i gonna try pull my SEQ up! JY itchy!

yar lol, SBQ very easy for me too just state the difference and similarities. The SEQ 1 question like 10 marks, always pull me down also.
JY FOR YOUR O's !!!
i shall teach la... at the same time revise...
for SBQ!!! SBQ NOT SEQ...
i always categorize them to 3 type... comparison, prooving, usefulness..
those who are hardworking should know what i am talking about....
comparison: example of question : how different are Source A compared to Source B.. (something like that la)
things to do for comparison :
- read and understand the source
- underline the main points of the source, (example, to encourage? to blame? to persuade?
- REMEMBER TO UNDERLINE THE EVIDENCE (this is to bring ur essay to a high lvl, congratz u lvl up!)
- when writing, i suggest, or rather i always paragraph each point in one paragraph, for example ( compare tone with tone, i.e. Source A has a aggressive tone, condemning... as i can see from the words used "fuck" and "damn" , while Source B has a very persuasive tone, who and who hoping that... as the words used "i hope you would consider" and "it would be good if.." suggests.) then u go to another paragraph, talk about other thing other than tone, like for example purpose, to persuade? to encourge?
- as u can see from the above point, i always give evidence to back up my stand, like i say Source A is aggressive, evidence being words used like ...
- it will be good if u can further explain each point, why he is aggressive?( condemn who and who? kena bombed?) but keep it short, if not u got no time.. for me SS always very hard to end nice one..
- please note that provenance is counted as "LOW level" , it would be good to add it as a so called extra paragraph, a short one will do..
Some questions also ask about WHAT are the difference between ....?
some question ask about HOW different...?
for me, WHAT are the difference..., u only give the difference, NO similarity
for the HOW different, give 2 difference and 1 similarity, if u have time give 1 more different even better.. but dun think so, dun risk it...
but if they ask how SIMILAR... u give 2 similarity, 1 difference...
NOTE: PLEASE NOTE I AM NOT A TEACHER, ONLY A STUDENT TAKING O LEVEL THIS YEAR, I HAVE NEVER GOTTEN A FULL MARKS FOR SBQ AND I AM ONLY REVISING, BUT I DARE SAY I AM CONFIDENT IN MY SBQ, (ABOVE 18 MARKS OVER 25 MARKS.) THEREFORE WHAT I WRITE MIGHT BE WRONG!!
Note note: i also am long winded, but thats cuz i am revising too, thats why need to be a bit precise.. haha!

this applies to written source, but what about cartoons' source ?
ok now for the 2nd part, the USEFULNESS
example question for usefulness... How useful is this source in telling you...?
How far does this source help u to understand....? how comprehensive is this source in....?
- always keep in mind what the source is asking, they source could be asking how useful is this source in telling u how successful is Singapore... but the Source can talk about WHY singapore is successful, and not HOW... what i am trying to say is, pls find the RELEVANT information from the source, and sometimes it can be very tricky...
- then u divide to 2 parts, one being the useful part, one NOT useful... for example:
Useful, this source is useful in telling me the perception of ...
this source tells me about how singapore is built which makes it successful, evidence...
NOT useful : from what i had learnt, this source did not tell me whether the ... has helped in singapore growth,
also from source L also stated how singapore became successful, but the Source B did not tell..
- u can also say that the source is NOT RELIABLE, THUS not useful in telling me the truth... since i cannot trust...
( this links to reliability)
- basically, it is about the limititation the source has, what the source have, what it dont have... give evidence, can be from other source (cross-reference) or from ur contextual knowledge
Note: to be honest, i am quite weak in this category, i always run a bit out of point to the reliability, so rmb to control urself, always link back to the usefulness.. it is mostly on how u phrase the question...
Note note: once again, let me repeat that i might have WRONG THINGS... i am just posting, for fun and for revising, and i am NOT a teacher..
ok now for the reliability part...
example of questions : how reliable is this source..
do u believe this source...?
can u trust this source ...?
things to look out for, for this type of question
1) the source is giving FACT or OPINION?
words like "i think", "i believe" are obviously indicating the source is made up from opinions... words or sentence like " survery has shown...." or "The object has made.." this type of sentence are obviously FACTS, it would be better if the source has evidence, and u should of cuz put the evidence..
2) generalisation.... example: "the Singaporeans always...." or "Everyone..."
if the source nv generalise at all, please also state that down, words like "10% of the..." or "name of someone...." is used..
3) bias.... is the source bias? how can u tell? prove that the source is bias.. the source kept mentioning that this organisation do this and that... and give no evidence... and only talk about the good side of the other organisation...
however, from what i have learnt... the other organisation also had done this and that...
4) the purpose of the source... u can tell the purpose from the provenance, the content, the tone and many more... more are elaborated from the earlier post of other forumnites..
5) cross reference... once again, u can use your own knowledge, or other source to prove or disprove the source is stating...
NOTE: THE CROSS REFERENCE IS VERY VERY TRICKY... this is because the other source u are cross referencing can be telling lies... u can try proving the other source right, or match with ur contextual knowledge... but please do not go out of point and prove the other source instead proving ur original one...
once again: i might be wrong..

JY FOR YOUR O's !!!
haha SAME SAME thanks and jy for ur O's too if u are taking it... haha!
and regarding the picture source based, there is no such thing as standard...
for the picture thing, u have to be very observant, DO NOT LEAVE OUT SMALL DETAILS...
u have to understand the purpose of the picture... what i can say is that u keep elaborating, it is ALRIGHT if u think too much... but please be logical.. dun one bird u link to world war...
and if the question ask u about how does the picture tells u the stability of this organisation, it is alright if u write the opposite (example, the ans is suppose to be telling u that the organisation is veyr stable, but u make it seems and interpret it as very unstable..) u can still score full marks even if u write opposite, AS LONG AS U MAKE REASONABLE AND LOGICAL DEDUCTION, dun leave out small details... and best is u know a bit about the organisation and prove that what u said is of cuz correct and links well with the picture...
and please!!! if anyone found something i can improve on or some mistake i made, even if small one, please point it out!
i believe a lot ppl here and i wanna learn much too..!! thanks!!
