I was wondering if I should take Literature as an extra subject for Secondary 3.
My results for Literature for Secondary 1 and 2 are as follows:
Term 1, Secondary 1(I AM DAVID): 72.7 A2.
Term 2, Secondary 1(I AM DAVID): 64.0, B4.
Term 3(THE GOOD EARTH), Secondary 1: 92.7 A1.
Term 4, Secondary 1(THE GOOD EARTH): 74 A2.
Term 1, Secondary 2(THE MERCHANT OF VENICE): 64.1, B4.
Term 2, Secondary 2(THE MERCHANT OF VENICE): 64.0 B4.
Term 3, Secondary 2(LITTLE IRONIES): 75.1 A1.
Term 4, Secondary 2(LITTLE IRONIES): 74 A2.
Should I take Literature? I'm taking History, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, E Maths, A Maths, English and Chinese. I'm in the Express Stream.
Please tell me if I should take Literature. The deadline for appeals will be 15 December 2009. Please!
Much thanks. (:

How is your English results? How good is your memory work? And most importantly, are you more interested in Literature or History?
Upper Sec Literature is quite different from that of Lower Sec, thus ppl who done generally well for Lit in Lower Sec might not do so for Upper Sec.
if u have strong interest in the subject and confident tt u will put in effor to do well, take it
Only if you have an interest in the subject. I am also going to sec 3 next year. I chose history, combined science(chem and physics) F&N, and POA.
take literature....i feel no use...
unless u wanna b eng major next time..then take it now..and take it in a levels..
else..dont waste time on arts...so time consuming to study

Hi Joanne,
Having studied Literature for 2 years, how do you find it? Do you like the subject? I will advice that you take the subject only if you have an interest in it, and knows that you will be able to handle it.
Anyway, if you feel that you will not do as well if you take up History, which is highly memory-based, and that you do not like Literature, you may wish to consider other Humanities subjects such as Geography or Social Studies.
Cheers.
Which school are you studying in?

Funniest thing I ever read, an Arts subjects being time consuming to study.
People can take a subject if they feel strongly that they can/should/want to, whether or not they will be taking the subject for the degree major or A levels or whatnot.
tt time sec 1 we took Charlotte's Web if i didnt rem wrongly.. sec 2 took I am David
personally, i think literature is a waste of time. It's not going to help you in future, unlike add maths, accounts, D&T, home econs (unless u think u can score a distinction in O levels easily).
that said, literature can be made to your advantage if u enjoy reading books and is good in englosh language. easy to score, but beyond that, nothing much.
i didnt take literature for o levels, so i dont know how is it tested (four books fr sec1-4?)
I'm honestly surprised the school made TS do Merchant of Venice in secondary 2 ... not exactly an easy book for 14 year olds.
Pure literature for O' Levels require you to take 2 books from secondary 3 to secondary 4, and only 1 book for elective literature.
And yes, literature more or less is a waste of time unless you like it/are good at it.
Hahaha...please la. Sec sch lit is not gonna really help you much if you gonna pursue it in uni or jc anyway. The level of learning is quite different. Sec sch lit is very very basic. I suggest you take geog. Pure geog if can coz it can really help you alot if you intend to take it in jc also and also more interesting to learn about your Earth and people than reading a basic lit book from which you will glean little.
P.S. I took pure geog and elective history in sec sch. I did lit, geog and econs in JC. So I roughly know what I am talking about.

My school used to study Merchant of Venice as well though my year they decided to change it to Julius Caesar

Erm. No.
Look at the H1/H2 Geography requirements now. You can take Geography in JC without having taken it in Secondary School...
i.e. secondary school literature is just as useless as secondary school geography in terms of having a headstart on the subject for JC.
So the best advice we can give TS now is, take it only if you are good at it and/or if you like literature.
halooooo
i took elective lit. cause i liked it.
and yes, lower and upper sec lit a lot a lot of difference.
maybe for lower lit ur essay write 1 or 1.5page but upper lit sometime requires 3 ~ 4 pages ?
so yea. take it only if u like it. perhaps u wan take pure, just in case u find u canot cope with lit.

It helped me, but I still have no idea if I should take Literature.
I mean, I guess I like Literature, but I’m not sure if i’m able to cope with it. Thanks!
Neither will you know for sure whether you can cope with any of the other humanities subjects. However, the most important thing is your interest in Lit, which is missing from the other subjects.
Anyway, passion is one thing, but remember, commitment is the most important thing.
