Hi,
Which level of mathematics do you intend to focus on?
To get started:
1. Find out about the syllabus at "www.seab.gov.sg".
2. Have a look at textbooks that schools are using. Look at assessments books too.
3. Obtain some recent exam papers to study question trends. Work yourself out on those papers to have a feel as well.
4. Compile a checklist of concepts and skills, if you really want to go deep into the curriculum and content. See what a checklist looks like at:
http://weews.wetpaint.com/page/Checklist+of+concepts+and+skills
and
http://wenshih.wordpress.com/checklist-of-concepts-skills/
5. Find out what your students really need to clarify about and to reinforce concepts and skills on. Lessons ought to be planned with their needs in mind, rather than at a tutor's convenience and comfort level.
6. Be realistic about pacing. Work around the students' level of keeping up, and keep each lesson focused on some key concepts and skills. There is no need to cover many questions. It's about the quality of discussing about problem-solving, rather than the quantity of completing them.
7. One-to-one tuition may be easier to begin with, rather than joining a tuition centre to teach a group. Teaching a group requires a tutor to know content right at his/her fingertip.
Jiayou, and welcome to the teaching fraternity!
Cheers,
Wen Shih
