Hi everyone, I'm a 2nd year poly student with below average grades. However I do harbour the ambition of becoming a lawyer. I am lucky enough to possess the means to go overseas and study. Does anyone know which overseas university has a law school recognised by the law society in Singapore and is not too difficult to get into? Much thanks.

Of course, if you are able to get into National University of Singapore (NUS) Law, then you do not need to go overseas. It seemed that Singapore Management University (SMU) also has a Law Faculty recognized by Law Society.
As for overseas law schools, it depends on which country is suitable for you and also the module you are majoring in. Corporate law, criminal law, contract law, property law etc...
Best to check around with the univerisities as the listed univerisities above are all recognized by Law Society as you mentioned.
TS, you only need 2 "A" level passes to enrol in the University of London LLB (Honours) external degree.
SIM, Stansfield and ITC are 3 private institutions that run the course in Singapore.
However, you need to get 2nd Class Upper Honours to be called into UK bars ie with the qualification, you can go to UK and do your apprenticeship and get qualified as a lawyer in UK.
Once, you are qualified as a lawyer in UK, you can come back to practise laws in Singapore after you have passed professional law exam conducted by Singapore Law Society.
UOL exams difficult to pass lar
Thanks guys, but what I want to know is if anyone has any experience searching for a suitable uni before. I'm not fussed where I go as long as I get my law degree. My current results more or less rule out a local uni so I wanted to know which of the above uni's don't really look at results. Cause from what I've heard, to be called to the bar all you need is a degree from one of those uni's. After that, no one really cares about your educational qualifications

No highly recognised universities will accept a student with lousy results, especially the universities whose LLB qualifications that are accepted by the Singapore Law Society.
Are you thinking that you have the money so these universities will accept you into their LLB programme even if your results are lousy ?

Perhaps, but I do happen to know that testimonials, CCA's and the like do play a part. And those I have in abundance. And yes I happen to be thinking along those lines. If I need to invest to secure my future, now why would'nt I?

Testiominals and CCA will only help if your results just meet their cut-off criteria.
If the entry requirements of these universities are so laxed, Singapore government will not have recognised the LLB qualifications of these universities.
If you are really serious on a legal career, take the "A" level exam and do well in it. With the good results, you will be able to pursuit your career as a lawyer.

I was thinking of that, but that would take too long. Honestly as a guy, because of NS I feel the time constraint. Hence to be perfectly frank, I'm looking for the quickest way out. If I can find a uni to take me in. I'm not fussed, hence I'm enquiring here

that degree is totally useless.
from ministry of law website:
External degrees are generally not recognised for the purposes of admission to the Singapore Bar.
Under the Legal Profession (Qualified Person) Rules, the “qualified person” requirements generally include having read a law degree as a “full-time internal candidate” for at least 3 years at an approved university.
Under the Rules, the term “full-time internal candidate” specifically excludes, among other things, external candidates, self-study candidates and candidates under any correspondence course. Please note that external degrees conferred by the University of London are also excluded.

quickest doesnt mean U dont have to work for it...
if U are not going to work for it...dont waste everybody's time.

true.
TS, do you know that even if you enrolled into a recognised law school, you still need a 2nd lowers honour or be in the top 70% of the cohort, in order to qualify for bar test?
its not so easy to be a lawyer.

Yeah I know. My main intention is to fulfil the minimum requirements asap. Which is why I am wondering if anyone here is able to give good advice on the various universities rather than being so quick to point out what I already know or give me lessons on morals
Generally all uk universities look mainly at A levels. however, certain uk universities do entertain polytechnic diplomas provided your diploma is not in the field medicine. LSE for one considers diploma holders and if im not wrong there was a feature in the straits times about a poly student who got accepted a few days ago. if you're really interested you should go check it out.
you should also try to take the LNATS so that universities like leeds, britol, ucl, kcl will consider your application. i didnt take LNATS so i could only apply to very few universities for law.
As for which is easiest, it's really hard to say because most universities put down admission requirements based on UCAS tariff points, which is based on A levels grades. there should be a table of equivalence though so you should check out their webpages for more info.
Also, since you're only in your 2nd year, why not just get better grades for your final to pull up your gpa?
This is ridiculous. You're either good enough or you're not. You can't "hack" your way to being recognised as a lawyer. Perhaps your precious resources ought to have been expended on learning the skills required to be a lawyer earlier on than to look for short-cuts to admission into law school right now.
I'm not sure but is it true that there are so many uni to enter into?
My friends are lamenting that so few uni to enter, so you might wanna check again if there is any hidden requirement (not sure)
@ moka: Yeah, these are the universities that the singapore bar association recognises. but you're also right in saying that there are 'hidden requirements'. These 'hidden requirements' are different for schools in different countries. It is best to check out the ministry of law website for more information. Generally, you will need to take an LLB (Hons) and you must place within the top 70% of your cohort or attain a 2nd upper class honours. In addition, a combined law degree will not be accepted. You will also need to complete 6 months of legal practice before taking part B of the Bar exam.

Hello, sorry not true. SIM does provide UOL courses but not LLB. I am currently an undergrad with UOL LLB in its external programme.
And they have already lowered the criteria to qualify for the UK Bar to 2nd Class LOWER instead of Upper. After which, having passed the bar exams in 1 year, you've gotta work for 2 more years in UK as a barrister and then come back to practise in Sg as a foreign lawyer.
Alternatively, try the SMU Juris Doc programme, but that requires 2nd Class UPPER and it's a full time course of 2 to 3 years, depending if you can opt for an accelerated course. Don't forget it's 60k in total. ;)
