Hi guys! I urgently need help regarding these two PSLE maths questions. I was stumped when asked by my tutee! Can't believe the level of difficulty of the PSLE these days! Its crazy!
Hi,
Nearer the exams, students should
- REVISIT old problems they have encountered and solved previously,
- RECOLLECT what they did or made mistakes in, and
- REINFORCE concepts and problem-solving strategies.
Students should NOT do any more new, obscure, difficult questions that may erode their level of confidence.
Tutors need not do everything that tutees ask them to; instead tutors can help tutees select appropriate questions suited to the ability of the tutee. Thanks.
Cheers,
Wen Shih
Hi Wen Shih
I am very very worry for my son, his maths is very weak and his prelim exam results is very very bad.
Has been struggling with the maths lately (bring him for tuition) and I hope he can at least score 45 to 50 marks for his psle.
Yesterday, his tuitor told him not to do any more questions, instead revise all the latest maths questions given to him by his teachers and tuitors.
Other than your helpful tips above, any advise you want to give to the students out there especially those very weak studens?
I am very worry he might hit U grade...that is unthinkable.
Hello,
Thank you for your reply. I am very much aware that the key to doing well for any exam at this point in time (actually since about month plus ago) for maths is just practice practice practice. However, those two problems stated above are from a practice paper given by the school to be handed in and discussed on monday. We have tuition later on today. So please any help regarding the two questions would be very much appreciated. I cannot approach him later today with the reply that I dont want to teach him this question because its too late. He should concentrate on questions he got wrong earlier and focus on them. What about these questions? What if similiar questions come up for the PSLE?
Cheers!
I have asked my kid to look at this question and he unable to solve it saying it is indeed tough.
My heart sunk....I wonder how he gonna take his exam.
Very chialet now.
Any1? Can help me out before tuition later on tonight? Your help will be very much appreciated!
1st question
spoon = 0.50 + fork
4u of fork
3u of spoon
total price = 156
4u x price of fork = 84 ---------------(1)
3u x (price of fork+ 0.50) = 72 --------------------(2)
divide equation 1 with 2
4/3 x price of fork = (price of fork+0.50 )x 84/72
96/84 price of fork = price of fork + 0.50
12/84 price of fork = 0.50
price of fork = 3.50
price of spoon = 4
no of fork = 24
no of spoon = 18
wow its definitely difficult for a psle student. maybe models will help to visualise the situation
omg! Thanks you guys! i get it now! Just in time for tuition too! haha THanks!
