Ehhh, I not sure which section to post. So I just post here. (Homework section doesn't seems appropriate. ._.)
Ok anyway, hi all. :3 I need advice from the seniors and sensei here. Hope you all can help me.
Got a private diploma.
But cannot use it to go to SMU/NUS.
Thinking of taking private A level.
NUS
(Bachelor of Social Sciences (Honours) in Economics)
http://www.fas.nus.edu.sg/acad/subjects/ss_ec.html
SMU
(Bachelor of Science (Economics))
http://www.economics.smu.edu.sg/bsc/economics/index.asp
Is it possible for me to go into one of these courses if I take a private A level?
3H2 + 1H1 + GP. I cannot take science subject.
I went into SEAB site and check the syllabus. Mathematics, Economics and Management I somewhat famaliar already (at least got half covered in my diploma modules). So the 3 H2 subject is Mathematics, Economics and Management. H1 is Chinese studies and then GP.
What are the results that I should aim for? Only straight A student can enter?
Need advice. Thank you.

It is possible. However, have you considered using your dip to enter an overseas uni or a private uni instead? It is going to take at least another year for you to study for your private "A", if not longer. Thus, your dip will sort of go to waste, unless you use it to take up a part-time job for the time being.
Results-wise you will not need need straight A's.

For the NUS course, you will need ABB / C
For the SMU course, you will need, coincidentally, ABB / C as well.
Thank you so much for your advice.
Yea, I know my diploma might go to waste. I use my diploma to get a slightly better paid job.I will be working for another year, so I will be using my time to study for A level.
Private uni... it's not that I don't want. I have considered, and SIM is one choice. But the thing is there is a reason why our local university is more prestigious. I mean, I don't know la, but productivity-wise, I am sure those who graduated from NUS/NTU/SMU sure have a certain level of standard of productivity. Otherwise, how do they get in anyway? I may be wrong though.
Secondly, SIM degree not recognise in government sector also, I am thinking of NIE but they won't count my Bsc (Econs) if I take from SIM. =/
do you realise what you are getting into? its not so simple say retake then can retake
are you familiar with the syllabus of the subjects you mentioned?
and private A lvl is usually for people who needs to retake theirs, if the aim is to get into local uni.
do you have a pass in o lvl higher mother tongue? if not, you need to take H1 mother tongue also. it is a requirement for local uni.
then there's smth called project work for JC students, where it is included in uni admission calculation too. as a private candidate, you will not be able to sit for this paper, and this penalises you during admission exercise.
furthermore, even the core subjects are not easy. you need full time studies for 2 yrs to study everything again. do you have access to lecture notes, tutorials, and past year school papers to practice? 1 yr is definitely not enough for someone like you to prepare for A lvls from scratch.
and since you already have a private diploma, why waste the time and effort to go through the A lvls? just go straight on to SIM or overseas uni, and save yourself 2 yrs in the process.

which SIM are you referring to? global sim or UniSim?
the government does recognise unisim.

It is not really true that all those who graduated from the three local unis are the best. Some of those who got in wasted 3/4years fooling around, and ended up with just a pass degree. It has more to do with the individual than the institute.
If you are thinking of entering NIE, then you should consider going straight for the diploma in general education instead of taking private 'A'. Work hard, get good results, and you can crossover straight over to the degree program after 2 years.

Hi deathmaster.
Thank you very much for your advice.
Of course I have done my research thoroughly. I am not underestimating A levels. I have read through the syllabuses from SEAB website. The H2 subjects that I am able to do are Mathematics, Economics and Management in Business. During my diploma course, I ace my mathematics and statistic modules and I am sure I am familiar with at least 50% to 60% of H2 Mathematics syllabus. Likewise for Economics and Management, but I would say, some topics in the syllabuses in Economics and Management are new to me.So I am not entirely doing A level from scratch, considering I have some knowledge.
Resources such as past year papers and tutorials, are limited. I have friends who are tutors for JC students, so I may be able to get it from them. At least I have some resources to work on.
My concern is,
Like what you have said, "Project Work" is a subject not available to me as a private candidate. Will I be at a disadvantage compared to the rest of the applicants? Will my application even be considered for admission?
Btw, thank you for letting me know UniSIM degrees are recognised by the government. I just check with MOE and they will put degree holders into GEO 1 scale. So, going into UniSIM is another choice for me if NUS/SMU don't accept my applications.

Hi Forbiddensinner
I am not comparing the Universities in terms of rank only. But I am sure there are reasons why NUS/NTU/SMU is a much highly sought after Universities. I agree with you, that individuals matters more. However, the standard of University do play a part, am I right? Otherwise, why do they rank them as the one of the top few university?
Please correct me if I am wrong. My knowledge in education and universities is very limited.
