'I am concerned about the language or accent barrier. English is not the first language.'
Thursday's article ('Teachers from India join Singapore schools') highlighted how teachers from India are being recruited to teach subjects including the Indian mother tongue language, English, history, geography and economics. While teachers from India may be well-suited to teach the Indian mother tongue, I am concerned about the language or accent barrier between these teachers and their Singaporean charges, in teaching the other subjects in English. English is not the first language of most residents of India, with most using it as a second or third language. How does the Ministry of Education plan to ensure that their spoken English will not compromise the quality of teaching?'

no doubt their english std is pretty good
but the machine-gun speed and accent (and action -- the head) are quite irritating and distracting

Haha, if they are going to teach English, they better not have a thick accent.
There was once I attended a Biomed talk in my school and there was this doctor from india.. the accent is really strong. For the first 15mins, I was trying hard to understand what was she saying... after that, it quite easy to understand ler~ :-D the flavour accent is very strong, true~ It's more about the content, not the accent actually
Hi,
Accent can put students off. The speaker has to be sensitive to the needs of the audience too. Thanks.

I would rather Indian lecturers over E Asian lecturers anytime.
Their accents are either difficult to understand at best or cannot even be understood by fellow Asians like Thais etc.

Lol, my secondary school social studies teacher said she had a lecturer from China who went to a university in USA. He had 'Chinese accent with an American slang', in the words of my teacher. Apparenly, that was the only module she failed, lol, because she couldnt understand and had to study everything on his own.
Accents are a fun way to practice speaking English.

Where did you get this accent? Did you study overseas, or is it put up like our local radio broadcasters, haha.
i am more worried about mainland indian teacher might bring their caste mentality to our classrooms and force it upon the children esp. on local indian.
