Hi everyone, this is Michael from the USA. I'd like to
apply to the math Ph.D. program at NTU. I have a
question about grading scale. In the USA the grading scale is
as follows:
90=A=4.0
80=B=3.0
70=C=2.0
60=D=1.0
Less than 60=F=0
For example, in a course the two midterm exams count for 60% and
the final exam counts for 40%. I get 77 and 93 on the
midterm, 88 on the final. My score for the course is
77x0.3+93x0.3+88x0.4=86.2, so I get a B.
If I have AABCD for a semester, then my GPA is
(4+4+3+2+1)/5=2.8
How do you convert U.S. GPA into Singapore GPA? What does the
grading scale of NUS and NTU look like? I've heard that 80 is
an A. Is it true?

Generally, we have:
95% = A+, 90% = A, 85% = A-, 80% = B+ .... so on and so for.
Our GPA is out of 5, so A+ and A are both 5, A- is 4.5, B+ is 4.0, ......
Less than 60% is a fail as well.
Note that this is "generally", since there is moderation to bring down the grades (E.g. 85% for A) in some of the faculties, or when everyone's results are crappy.
The only grade not moderated is the A+ grade, since it is something which needs to really be earned.
Adding on, we also consider Academic Units (AU) here. Each module may have different AU, so the weightage may be different.
For example, you scored A for a module worth 3AU, A- for a module worth 2AU and B+ for a module worth 1AU
Your CGPA will be:
[3(5) + 2(4.5) + 1(4.0)] / [3 + 2 + 1] = 4.67
I think the grading scale in Singapore is more lenient. We also have "curving" or "moderation" but it is not common. Maybe 1 out of 8-10 professors would do it. A lot of Americans don't want to study math and science because it is extremely difficult to make A's and B's.
which uni are you from? its easier to get As from say UMiami, than Columbia...
University of North Carolina at Charlotte. It is a crappy school.
