Hi, can anybody help me with the question below:
---------------------------------
The chemical equation below shows the formation of lead chloride and sodium nitrate.
Pb(NO3)2 + 2 NaCl à PbCl2 + 2 NaNO3
A student wants to prepare at least one of the two products in the above reaction. However, he has only the following reagents available:
Lead nitrate, nitric acid, hydrochloric acid, sodium chloride, lead oxide, sodium hydroxide.
(a) Name two reagents, from the above list, which can be used to prepare at least one of the products.
(b) Outline the steps needed to prepare a clean and dry sample of the product mentioned in (a) above.
---------------------------------
Thanks in advance!

To obtain PbCl2(s), mix of NaCl(aq) with Pb(NO3)2(aq), doesn't matter which is in excess. The reside would be the desired PbCl2(s), while the filtrate would be a mixture of NaNO3(aq) and either NaCl(aq) or Pb(NO3)2(aq) depending on which was used in excess. Wash the PbCl2(s) with distilled water, and dry with filter paper.
If NaNO3(aq) is desired, carry out titration of HNO3(aq) against NaOH(aq) (or vice-versa), with a suitable pH indicator. Titration is necessary because we do not want excess of either reactant (both of which are soluble, thus we cannot use the filtration method). Warm gently to evaporate away excess water, and cool the saturated solution to obtain crystals. Wash the NaNO3 crystals with distilled water, and dry with filter paper.
Thanks UltimaOnline! =)
