Just started studying and kinda curious about the % when u submit ur assignments, thru turnitin. How high is too high and would it affects ur grades if got high % of plagarism(too many cut and paste)?
if you have several whole sentences or paragraphs exactly the same as the oustide sources....you are dead..
Some times such similiarity in sentences are very common. The examiner will try his/her best to analyse whether did you plagarise other people's work or merely just coincidental. Technology is good because it's help improve efficiency.
Your case is internal control of plagarism which help to deter student from submitting the duplicated document which were copied from another friend or past years work.
write it in your own ways. Never copy and paste the entire text unless you're quoting it with reference style. I am sure you know this right?

yeah just took up Essential Academic Writing Skills
turnitin has many types of softwares and levels of detection...similarity index is only basic..
0% not necessary means your work is 100% original
so how high is high?
would higher% affect the grades?

u may have 4% in similarity, but the examiner would need to know where these sources come from and how did u use them....copy all exactly the same without referencing or with relevance.....u will be deducted accordingly...
dun waste time to find out how high....but its always a good rule of thumb to remain low below 5% is already classified as very good....but make sure that 5% is not exact replica or marks would be deducted...
similarity index does not measure the quality and originality of your work, pls take note....

As more and more students submit into the datapool… there will be more and more similiarities. The marker will be well equipped to breakdown the similiarities and focus on every single reference and paraphrase.
Turnitin is by no means perfect; after all some (original) basic sentences can be very common across many original works. Also, some common quotations and sayings (such as 'It's a small world after all') can't really be paraphrased without losing their meaning. These things can turn up as false positives during the plagiarism check.
Just use your logic and know how to paraphrase ideas and concepts from your sources without copying them outright. Obviously you'll be asking for trouble if you copy full sentences and paragraphs without at least paraphrasing them.
there is no such thing as perfect.
