I'm currently enrolled full-time as an accountancy and finance student at a local polytechnic. I kept on regretting and repenting over my English o level result. I got a c6 for o level English yet my English teacher expected me to get a distinction for o level English after reviewing my self-written English essays. During prelims, I got a b4 for English. I'm not a language person. I got a b4 for combined humanities and c5 for Chinese which I took for a second time. My english result by far is the worst. It was responsible for contributing a large amount of points to my l1r5. I always merely pass my English comprehension, and get mediocre English oral results..but I've consistently scored a1s for upper sec english essays... I've always had dreams of going to some reputable, elite jcs like acjc, etc. but I couldn't make the cut as my l1r5 is not even 2 or 3 points closer to the jc's cop. Also, i've been rejected by sp accountancy course in view of the fact that I missed by 1 point. Do you think its highly recommended for me to retake my o level English in a private school? Will there be a guaranteed improvement in my English by 2-4 grades if I study smart, also practice a lot of comprehension exercises? Which private school do you recommend? Any tips for improving o level English?
If you really want to take JC route then go retake your O
But if you are not those very fast learner and need to take your own pace to learn.. Poly is better for you...
No point you jump into an environment you are unable to cope.. that's setting yourself up for failure..However... I understand NUS look at Poly applicants' O level results.. not sure about other SG uni...do some research and find out,
If that C6 grade is really bothering you that badly.. then go and retake.. no harm trying again.
Your comprehension bad is because your vocabulary sucks. Read more English books and use a dictionary to increase your vocab.
Essays emphasise sentence/paragraph structures and grammar... you do well on essay does not mean your vocab is good.
I have friends who got Cs for their O levels English and still got into local university
NTU takes your O level results into account when you apply for their course, your o level results makes up 20% of your 'admission', you can read about it here:
http://admissions.ntu.edu.sg/UndergraduateAdmissions/Pages/PolyDiploma.aspx
What matters most now is that you maintain a high GPA for the rest of your years in poly, as 80% of your GPA makes up the university computation score
Dont worry too much, how bad is your O levels?
Recently I still got accepted by NTU, i enrolled with an not very good GPA of 3.61, and i didn't score very well for O levels, i got about 21 points for L1R5.
Work hard and you can still go into uni.
